Sounds evolutionary to me.

Deep discomfort with a situation is likely (outside of mental illness) an instinctual early warning sign of physical danger. So erring on the side of scrutiny and avoidance is probably a wise survival move.

Like when you see a prey animal go kind of stiff and look around nervously and then run. That's their early warning - no clear danger get - system making them uncomfortable.
