Mississippi Heat

The sun beats down without relent

Scorching the earth with fierce intent

The air lies still, no breeze in sight

As stifling heat grips day and night

Magnolias wilt in the glare

Their blossoms droop with nary a care

Cicadas buzz in fevered song

As people pray the heat won't linger long

The mighty river flows on slow

Its murky waters barely flow

Fish seek the depths to stay alive

All nature struggles to survive

Porch swings sit empty, still as can be

No one dares step out in the heat

Ice tea and shade, that's all they crave

Praying the thermometer will behave

When night falls, no relief in view

The air so thick you can't see through

Restless and soaked in sweat you lie

As warm wind drifts a listless sigh

In Mississippi heat so dire

One can't help but tire and tire

The sun beats down with searing rays

Long endless summer torrid days
