i'm not sure, but definitely things are not right in brazil
madeira seems to be, at least on the north side of the island, a frequent refuge for portuguese who have fled the trouble in south africa, and there is a lot of brazillians here as well. a lot of younger madeirans also have spent a lot of time in england but they prefer it here.
also, it seems to me that portuguese people are quite comfortable with and prefer to be able to just blurt things out as they think of them. it's one of the first things you notice about the people here on this island, they basically have a slightly tense disagreement and they are shouting at each other like it's really serious, but it almost never is. probably this is a portuguese cultural thing, and i wouldn't be surprised if brazillians are also prone to speaking their mind very forthrightly, which means that they would be chafing more than maybe other cultures at the censorship that really went wild in the covid days.
