I have family members that are so captured by one ideology, or another, that I’ve seen their faces morph into looks of suspicion if I don’t automatically cosign their opinion (let alone actually disagree on something).

I’ve taken to listening more than I talk, and when I do talk, it’s usually questions. I’ve taken the initiative to try to find points on which we agree. The goal here is to set an example in the hope that they might begin to do the same with me, then maybe others. The progress has been very slow, but the conversations have been more meaningful and I think I’ve cracked through the programming once or twice.
