I’ve been on the same trajectory with building a text based irc client but via web right now.
I emulated chat participants by looking at the last active people from 24 hours ago (probably to be tweaked)
Hell yeah! I love seeing other text based clients. I had a similar thought on how to do a “participant” list but it wouldn’t be 100% accurate as you said. The IRC qualities have to be “cheated” a bit.
Yeah I did it by recent events since we can lurk but the idea for me is once you send an event you’re “in” until you time out.
This makes me happy. Haha.
I just realized you are using NIP-28 where I’m just subscribing to NIP-01 kind 1 events currently. I may need to re-think my implementation or make a separate version/switch/something.
My idea was to have the console client connect to a single (for now) “IRC” purposed relay where the users of that relay would persist chats via event type 1. I’m now thinking about the pros and cons of each.
Yeah I was following the kind 4x events with the channels.
I coded it with a single relay partly because I’m still figuring it all out and because I don’t know if I want the trouble of having to balance the visibility across multiple relays (and potential spam you would get with that)
There are trade offs there and I’m just figuring it all out.

What’s the scroll speed?
As fast as a relay can return subscription events currently. I have some basic event_content and pubkey filtering for spam. The SDTV/CRT version I’m running here received some enhancements last night like lightning invoice parsing, line break removal, filtering of emojis (as the old fonts don’t support those) and a few other tricks.
Can it display an ASCII PEPE image? If so can you show me? Asking for a Fren.
