What do you all recommend for an affordable Android phone. It’s for me to learn stuff, ranging from testing new nostr clients, to maybe trying the de-googling graphene setup I keep hearing so much about.

I’ve only ever used iOS since my last flip phone. Looking for something budget-friendly and likely won’t even get a phone plan. Any suggestions?

100% Pixel

Especially good for Grapheneos I've heard, I use the 6a

Tough to find a 6a it seems, at least new - no longer being made?

Maybe a 7 or 8 or 7 or 8 A. I got mine brand new like 6 months ago for $200

Thank you! Although nostr:npub1f6ugxyxkknket3kkdgu4k0fu74vmshawermkj8d06sz6jts9t4kslazcka your point about factory unlocked (and, I would assume, also carrier-unlocked?) — I can’t tell with this particular but seems “total wireless” is the carrier. Thanks for finding this either way, Uno 🤙

Not sure it would matter what Carrier it is if it's for testing purposes only, if you want to use it as an everyday phone then it definitely would.

It is brand new as well.

The actual carrier def wouldn’t matter as I don’t expect to have a phone plan at all. But trying to figure out the factory unlock thing

(In order to replace the stock OS with graphene)

If you want to use Graphene OS you must do it on a pixel. Doesn't particularly matter which model, but it has to be a pixel.

Oh! Thank you. I didn’t realize graphene only worked on a pixel. Real glad I checked 😅

It seems like 6a is no longer in production at all..?

swappa

craigslist

bestbuy

backmarket

in that order

Thanks homie

define affordable

I mean I’d love to spend 2-300 bucks. But I doubt that’s going to happen. Especially since I just learned that only Pixels support graphene lol

So the cheapest available pixel I guess

no

cheaper pixels will die on you

Roger that. Thanks 🤝

you're in for a rough ride

a 250 5a that dies suddenly after 9 mo

or a 400 8 that rocks on

Haha fair enough. I’m convinced

If you don't want to mess around with rooting/installing Graphene OS you can use the Shizuku app to open up a bunch of privacy control functionality on a regular/non-pixel Android phone.

Shizuku can open a wireless ad bridge so you can use certain apps to "de-google" your phone. This video from "How-To-Men" explains it really well.

Thanks! That’s great to know. I’d kind of like to learn how to do the whole bootloading thing, as I’ve never done anything like that before and would feel pretty awesome to figure it out.

Unless you and nostr:npub1f6ugxyxkknket3kkdgu4k0fu74vmshawermkj8d06sz6jts9t4kslazcka say that doing so it like skiing black Diamond when I’m still learning pizza/chopsticks on the beginners’ ski hill 😂

Zenfone 9/10 are pretty great. big power in a small form factor

Still waiting on that bootloader unlock though 🥲

Thanks!
