IP is the source of a huge number of modern problems. IP violates basic property rights & prevents the spread & application of new knowledge. I can't use my own energy & time & materials to build something if someone else built it first or had the money or political connections to buy monopoly privleges first. It prevents a lot of open development which would be more likely to lead to standardization across many different industries. And it rewards people who do nothing but aim to disrupt innovation & steal from innovative producers.
Patents are just monopoly rights granted on material recipes for an arbitrary amount of time. Patents don't last forever because "forever" would make the scam unsustainable. IP does not exist in the culinary world because monopolies on food recipies would likely cause people to starve, again making the scam unsustainable.
Property rights exist to reduce conflict over scarce & rivalrous things. Ideas or patterns for arranging materials are definitely not rivalrous, & are only ever marginally scarce. If nothing is missing, then nothing has been stolen. Precise, low cost communication & copying are advancements that should improve lives everywhere. People trying to stop communicaton & copying are trying to keep people from improving their own lives with their own stuff.
If I can take some pictures of your car & print one out for myself using my own machine & materials, have I stolen your car? Have I stolen a car from the original manufacturer? They haven't even lost a sale, because I would never buy a new car, but I am the sort of person who would build one.
