I asking particularly about intellectual property, not patents. Patents exclusivity requires a state of sorts controlling the market. No debate there.
But what about intellectual property as secret? It can be held exclusively, while it remains a secret. Like a trade secret. If others figure it out, that's in their freedom to use it.
Secrets are yours as long as you can keep them. That is not what is generally meant by IP tho.
