China has 3x the population of the US, but the average age of that population is increasing. They're in a window right now where they have a functioning market economy (at least partially) and a young enough educated population that they can innovate rapidly.

By sheet statistics, something like DeepSeek would seem more likely to come out of China than out of the West, at least in the present moment.

They're headed towards the same demographic cliff as the West is, though, with fertility rates below replacement and a soon-to-be inverted population pyramid. Until then, they are trying to secure their position as a superpower.

I think the West is just surprised because China is finally getting past merely copying stolen tech—they are developing legitimate industries of their own.

Well, they built a ChatGPT knock-off, not ChatGPT.

What they getting good at, is building the stuff that the West has forbidden building because it's next-level creepy, but a lot of the announcements have turned out to be nothingburgers because they're chronic liars.

I've had the great misfortune of dealing with Chinese internal and external suppliers and I'm scarred for life.

Their economy is collapsing at full-speed, youth unemployment is sky-high, and they are running out of dollars to trade with and browbeating the larger companies to get more dollars, and the government statistics are outrageous lies, and etc. but they be like
