New platforms usually grow through influencer momentum driven by innovating new way of doing things. Simply throwing people with large followings into Nostr won’t work. We’ve seen this already. There has to be a reason for them to stick around and for their audience. Otherwise the network effects of the places they are coming from are too strong.

This is why I don’t think blue sky will last in the long run. It looks like every other social platform but a little different. They have a good amount of hype and momentum but ultimately not selling anything new. As soon as the big following people get tired, so will their followers. They are not coming for the new experience but escaping for ideological reasons.

In that respect Nostr probably has better chances long term but we have other issues plus all of the issues bluesky has.

Happy to be wrong on this.

You’re not wrong on this. The incentives they’re accustomed to do not (yet) exist on nostr. We see them join, post, and vanish, over and over again.

Influencer has a negative connotation to me, like you are being manipulated. I like the term “creator”.

Ok.

Maybe it's because a creator creates great content he likes while most influencers just create stuff to please their sponsors. #Nostr fixes this.

We can discuss terms but at the end of the day creators have influence over people’s thoughts opinions and decisions. Maybe not intentionally to manipulate but as a byproduct. But maybe that’s not what the term meant originally? I don’t know … I mean it as a more neutral byproduct without agenda

I agree that we need to attract them organically and have enough figured out to retain them. Although, it took two or three tries over time before I finally stuck around and went Nostr only. It may just be a cycle-like adoption scenario over time. I'm sure we will see newer creators who build platforms starting on Nostr like we see with every other platform. Some people almost specialize and maybe Nostr will have those people as an attraction for users.

I have a feeling it’ll be a long grind unless some individual clients create UX that is different and desired over existing alternatives and then actually applies marketing and growth strategies to it.

Depends what you mean by "Bluesky". Bluesky is a client, like Primal. There are a lot of other clients being built out on ATProtocol right now, like:

-WhiteWind (longform)

-Spark (TikTok)

-Flashes (Instagram/Olas)

-SmokeSignal (events)

-recipe.exchange (food)

-Tangled (github)

-Skeets (other Kind1)

-Deck.blue (notedeck)

...long list

I spend time over there too, and ATProtocol as a bare bones decentralised social protocol is very similar to Nostr. Nostr has a number of advantages depending on the use case (for B2B I think Nostr is much better) but lots of good architecture ideas on ATProtocol too.

Why I'm bullish on #nostr ...

I'm on #nostr a whole lot more than I ever was on Twitter or Mastodon for two simple reasons ... the Vibe and the Tribe ... and now I'm staying here because of network effect ... I have more friends here and I like more people here than on other networks

Two great folks who come to mind when I say "vibe" are nostr:nprofile1qqsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxummnw3ezucnpdejz7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09ug4n6q3 and nostr:nprofile1qqszd44fgen4ucpl3hjt7muuaazzqdahp3lwu9c07phdweelcdxf3ugpz4mhxue69uhkyetkduhxummnw3erztnrdakszxnhwden5te0wfjkccte9enk2arpd338jtnrdakj7a33qyxhwumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmvhj9400 ... they're such fun and helpful ... and now I have a "tribe" ... good friends like nostr:nprofile1qqs2sr7y57rrfm3x4272e9gmfn7hk44wrzat6v794lw0d0kkmjqwh5gpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezumrpdejqzrthwden5te0dehhxtnvdakqzynhwden5te0dehhxarjve6kutnrdakst0lgry, nostr:nprofile1qqs0cu4wf0x3g99dg0qz795j5taln5caux0929tkazem59pd9wqkm0spzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezumt0d5hsz8thwden5te0dehhxarj9e3xjarrda5kuetj9eek7cmfv9kz7qgkwaehxw309ahx7um5wfjkc6t5v4ejummjvuhsk8lzt0, nostr:nprofile1qqsqfjtqf9a0vx9wrr63g7e7tscfau7c5cj3w69pczpquqkfxa5vcwcpr3mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamnwvhj7mn0wd68ytnhd9hx2tc8p6z8l, nostr:nprofile1qqsy07tafc9xgry2jc7nlfcanu9x4tv43ta9qhl0mmwk65577sfzaucpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43z7qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yh8qunfd4skctnwv46z7qgswaehxw309ahx7um5wghx6mmd9ucg85lr

So, network effect came afterwards. First came the positive vibes from a great tribe. It's why I STAYED

Personally, I think the vibe and the tribe of eBay made it the success it is

The fundamental question is how do you get the vibe going? For me, it was discovering #nostr and #bitcoin and how much Papa nostr:nprofile1qqsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxummnw3ezucnpdejz7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09ug4n6q3 helped with that. Then, I kept asking question upon question and incredibly patient folks like nostr:nprofile1qqstwf6d9r37nqalwgxmfd9p9gclt3l0yc3jp5zuyhkfqjy6extz3jcpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgmwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxyunfva58gcn0d36zumn9wshszxmhwden5te0wfjkccte9ehx7um5wfcxcetzwvhxxmmd9u5ehdyr were always there.

The success of any network is a very human thing ... vibe and tribe

Question is: how do you get them going?

Thank you for your take maven

I defnitly also appreciate a lot, to meet the developers of my app directly within the app. Too cool.

In the whole discussion of growth, I am defnitly Team natural growth. Make the brand Nostr known, but let the people discover it. I discovered it for me. And I am sure many people out there love discovering things as well. Getting some hint in the wild, dive in and figure out how it works, with no pressure. I mean Nostr is that young, the network as a whole probably is still in beta.

So I am sure, when I just force my brother or my mum to use an account, after some days, they are frustrated about so many things and leave it behind with a taste they will remember for a long time.

Therefore I like the aspect, that technical people start out first, help to fix things. Then maby naturally some privacy and bitcoin podcaster move here, since too many people of their audience text them about it.

So I think every decision for a service has its user journey. And I rather like, when some people need 2 years from now to have heared 3 times about Nostr and then search it for the first time in their search engine. Maby some weeks later set up an account to test it. And when they get some value out of it maby they do not jump off.

But in the end every force produces a counter reaction. Therefor I will go for unforced guerilla tactics. Mention nostr in forums, news commentary section, to my friends and family. But I wait until someone asks me, how they can interact with Nostr. Let them search us first.

Hi karnage 🏴‍☠️🤟😉 Totally agree that throwing influencers onto a platform isn’t a growth strategy it’s a temporary boost at best. Real network effects come from actual utility and culture, not just imported audiences.

The real question is: what makes people stay? Bluesky looks like a Twitter clone with a different ethos, while Nostr is fundamentally something new. But we still have major hurdles UX, onboarding, retention.

What’s the key unlock that takes Nostr from early adopter enthusiasm to unstoppable? That’s what I’m thinking about.
