Depends where you’re at geographically. Run a perch rig in autumn and eat for for days
Southest US. Humid, hot, lush, swampy.
What's your target species... catfish, trout, walleye or bass?
Whos fishing? Kids or adults?
Myself, wife, and toddlers.
Fishing is not catching.
The line in the water is a bonus.
Definitely start with the toddlers in mind. Short button casters with a bobber and a live worm. Catch as many sunfish and blue gill as possible under any dock or shallow shoreline. The constant action is a little dopamine dump that they can’t get enough of. This will instill a genuine love for fishing which then sets them up for more advanced species down the road like trout, salmon etc. While catching a nice cutthroat on a dry fly sounds like a fun challenge for us-You’ll bore the hell out of your kids and turn them off to it completely(not all kids). If they’re not having fun, you’re not having fun. This is what my dad taught me first and now this is what I show my 3 year old. Now, he’s grabbing worms barehanded and refuses to let me cast for him or reel.
At first, do the same thing as them. Recommend any cheap spinner rod from any outdoor store. Next bump up to something a little more fun but similar like a Yamamoto/Senko worms and configure them in any of the orders like the pic below. This will help you with a couple things—learn how to action a bait correctly to get a response from fish you’re targeting and work on casting accuracy. Once you get those down, you’ll slowly begin to figure out how to locate fish based on their habitat and then you can branch out to different lures on your own because you’re learning what they’re looking fir in terms of food. Also, download the fishing knot app. It’s free and will literally walk you through every single knot step by step that you’ll need to get started. Patience with the kids is key. One second my kid is reeling in a bass on a worm and the next he’s using his rod as a sword and slashing the water. It’ll buff out.

I'm just getting one started!
While incomplete with some worms you could do just fine.
All sourced at a northern Michigan gas station 😄

Size 6 and 10 hooks, small bobbers, pinch weights in various sizes. Lots of swivels. 8lb test line. Maybe a few small flies for top water, when the fish are jumping. Jet Puff rainbow mini marshmallows, open the bag & let them dry out. Worms. Keep it simple at first & learn as you go.
I forgot a few important things: needle nose pliers, fingernail clippers, a knife, and a stringer. Those cheap twisty pole holders are a nice extra.
Set up for bream can be a lot of fun for newbies and kids
Go to your local, mom and pop bait shop and ask. They'll point you in the right direction.
I'm a red & white spoon and neon spinnerbait maxi. Bass and northern can't resist
I think you’re wanting to take the young kids so in that light. Go to Walmart and get a Zebco kids fishing kit. Zebco built a dynasty off of making kid ready fishing gear that you want be made when the accidentally throw the whole thing in the lake. Fish for panfish using bobbers and either a worm or piece of corn on a hook. I watched a guy at the lake yesterday real out a kids rod for his skew of grandkids and they were all having a blast catching tiny bluegill on pieces of corn. You pretty much are a full time guide while the littles and wife are learning to fish so don’t worry too much about gear for yourself yet. Get out and start having fun. Cheat code: Find a grandpa in your church/friend group who likes to fish and has taken their grandkids out. Grandpa patience was designed to go along with little kid fishing better than dad patience 🚁😁
