Zeus has Zapable Lightning addresses in their open beta. It's time. No more will we have to on-board someone and then tell them to install two wallets.

The amount of sats needed to open the channel is crazy tho. Sounds bad

Freedom isn’t free

Far from it. Especially speech.

1. It should be if we're trying to design a system that isn't trash

2. Putting your money in sus holes so the feds can probably take it isn't the way to get freedom in this broken system

Sus holes?

You’re advocating for cheaper custodied solutions over solutions where you hold your own keys.

Sit down.

You and I have different ideas of holding our own keys πŸ€”

i don't get it? how is running a bitcoin lightning node on your phone not holding your own keys? you own the device. it's yours.

1. Phones aren't secure

2. Lightning is sus

Having keys to regular on-chain crypto on a hardware wallet is much closer to holding your own keys

You have a custodial Lightning address from a mobile app attached to your profile. You’re being a hypocrite.

"Im ready to fight the state and resist compliance."

Has wallet of satoshi address in bio. πŸ˜…

So in your world, it's hypocritical to criticize security flaws while testing platforms? Weird post

If you go about criticising in an absolute manner, then yes.

So do I πŸ‘€ Though pay@derekross.me does exist and work as I used to use it. I go back and forth on updating my address back to the one host. My server gets hammered with http requests and my node gets an incredible amount of unpaid invoices being generated. It's probably fine now, but I'd hate for things to go down and me not be able to receive Zaps. Your Zeus Pay solution fixes that for small time node runners like me.

I’ll say it again, and I’m starting to feel like a broken record….

Some people are determined to let perfect be the enemy of good enough. Zeus is releasing a product that moves the needle in the right direction. That’s how software works. Incremental improvement.

β€œIs sus” is a terrible technical criticism as well.

This npub is sus. It has a cat profile pic.

Great. Now I’m suspicious of myself. I’ll spend the rest of the day dealing with this complex Derek. Thanks. 🀣

Zeus commit msg: refactor to remove sus. Replace with confidence.js.

I feel like we would at least use Typescript for that file πŸ˜…

You’ll be accused of being a Microsoft lackey.

Fuck what people call you. Typescript is useful.

This man knows how to dev.

It's directionally correct.

The role of a wallet is to nudge people inch by inch in the right direction rather than to alienate everyone who isn't prepared to go all in with a full node and steel plate.

Such a high deposit requirement does alienate people

It alienates more than a custodial wallet, and less than being told to run a full node and sign with airgapped entropy.

And yes, lighting has issues. What's your solution?

It's so little compared to the time, effort, and hardware required to setup your own node. Totally worth the price.

Probably worth the price, but makes me paranoid

I've been using the alpha for close to a month, it seems to be working well so far. Another option is Mutiny wallet, it seems to work well too. It has about the same setup fee.

I have channels of ~1M sats on both. No lost sats, even though both are technically beta software. That being said, I try to not keep an amount I would want to lose on lightning, so take that fwiw.

It doesn't matter what device hardware you're using for a wallet. Holding your own keys is the desired outcome which is infinitely better than someone else holding them. Now, if you're trying to make a distinction between hot, warm, and cold wallets, I could see that argument. Only hold in a hot wallet what you're comfortable losing.

How is this better or safer than running your own node?

It is your own node but on your phone. Plus we help you (optionally) with channel capacity, backups, and Lightning address infrastructure

How does this benefit someone who is already running umbrel Or start9.

If you use a remote LND node you can use the Lightning address service

But not everyone wants to doxx their own node πŸ€”

It would only get doxxed to ZEUS, it doesn’t exposed the node pubkey or info to the outside world.

You also don’t have to use it…

This is the killer feature. Wow. Amazing.

Someone needs to pay for the infrastructure to accomplish this.

A minimum deposit requirement is a sus way to "pay for" something, and this is an insanely high minimum deposit requirement for tipping on nostr

If you understood the costs involved, you wouldn't say this and if you do, you're looking for a too good to be true setup ... Like looking for a perpetual motion device, good luck with that.

Zeus Pay is really cool way to have non-custodial zaps with a completely mobile setup. Is it worth letting them take 50% of every zap less than 200 sats? That’s a hard sell for me. Hopefully that gets cheaper or it’s really un-useable for that purpose.

The key with all of these options is education and limiting exposure to being rugged. I believe that’s where the majority of the arguments are made and it’s not so black and white.

But just like everything in life, there are tradeoffs. Knowledge tackles emotions IMO.

My Setup -

WoS / Alby = Limited balance - fun tickets for Nostr (cash in my pocket for a night out)

Use case example : zapping on Nostr, buying a buddy a drink, etc

Zeus = Medium balance (debit card in my wallet / spending account)

Use case example : Shopping online via Lightning Store

Cold Storage = Large balance (Savings Account)

Use case example : storing wealth.

Just my thoughts….

Agree πŸ’― Zeus Pay gives users a powerful tool to add to their tool belt. Every tool works well for some things, and not as well for others. Self-custody is crucial to learn and put into practice. So is not accidentally losing a large % of payments. If zaps are more than just a play thing and are truly to be a vehicle of economic activity for content creators, then losing 10-50% of every micropayment tip up front is really a non-starter.
