how do you decide what is true?
Discussion
I did a heavy dose of LSD during the halving and there was a point where I was seeing multiple realities with different characters everywhere. And I was repeatedly trying to figure out if what I'm experiencing is real.
I have never been religious and growing up considered myself a atheist but I probably fit the label of agnostic more accurately. During the trip, I came to the conclusion that faith in God (the part of God that I experience everyday is my own consciousness), and trusting those that care for you is the only way out of a situation where logic and your senses fail you.
Also realized that, since we are born, we are always trying to figure out what is true and what isn't. And that starts with trusting that your mother will do the correct (true) thing.
Seemed very profound at that time, don't know how I feel about it now.
It’s profound AND TRUE in the way that you tripped down to path to this realization. It was a First principled and personal learning experience.
Is the realization novel. No, a bad mother fucks people up
Ask for the evidence
I don't. I settle for what is likely
Start with what you doubt. Then realize that doubt and inquiry are two sides of the same coin. From the duality, questioning is birthed. Questions get answered, but the truth guarantees questions only led to refining further questions. If your truth is an absolute answer, you can safely doubt it. If your inquiry has no further questioning, you can verily find it true.
I consistently consume a vast amount of information from many sources over the course of many years and then make judgements and assumptions based on my understanding. When I get things wrong I update my mental model and continue to refine my ability to make judgements over time. I’m usually fairly accurate, probably 70-90%
This is my approach too
Yes
I think the key is deciding what risks lie with ignoring or believing what is proposed as truth. It doesn’t matter in some cases;others it does greatly.
It has to make logical sense. Even if something is irrational, if the statement can be substantiated with evidence that makes sense, it is likely true.
I think a frustrating, but certainly true, fact about life is that we can never know truth in its entirety. We just strive to be as close to it as possible.
Truly, truth doesn’t matter that much to most people.
No truth. Just probabilityof it. Probability changes according to new information
3 simple questions
1) why
2) who said so
3) prove it

You don’t get to decide what’s true. You have to discover it. When you find truth, it resonates with your soul.
it's all an illusion...
Since it is essentially consensus based, truth at times can seem to be a bit of a moving target once examine your subject closely enough over a long enough time horizon. Perhaps instead of trying to determine whether some information meets the criteria of being objectively true, you can assess the information based on its value - i.e. is this information useful? Can society make productive use of this information to coordinate and make better decisions? If yes, it can work its way into consensus and earn the time-tested status of truth.
For me: stay open minded, remain curious, don’t search for truths and let my experiences lead me to what I think is true… but acknowledge they’re still just my beliefs.
