Be honest, you're using Big Tech because:

a) You think it's hard to switch

b) You think there won't be the software you need on Linux

c) You think nobody is using encrypted messengers

d) You say privacy is a nice idea, but I don't really need it

e) You tell yourself you'll learn later, which turns to never.

But every one of the statements is a lie.

It's NOT hard to switch,

Linux is easy man, my mom uses it, and she's older than computers existing. Linux Mint looks just like Windows. System76 PopOS can be made to look just like Mac iOS. The same way Apple has an "Apple store" for software, Linux also has an app store! And you can even use it in a graphical box. You don't need the command line.

The software you need IS on Linux.

Linux has software for web browsing, chat, and editing text (even microsoft word files can be opened). Adobe Photoshop is actually HARDER to use than open source GIMP, and it does the same things. Kdenlive is FASTER to render videos than Adobe Premiere of EQUAL OR BETTER QUALITY.

You don't have to go cold turkey, if you want to still chat with your friends on Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, that stuff all works on Linux and Degoogled phones. But you'll be surprised at who you will meet on freedom apps..

You are scared away because you think there's no help, no support group. But there's more of a Linux community than anywhere else, because the people genuinely care. Our SimpleX room has 600 people, and you will get replies. We also host an active Linux group on Session. There's the Linux.org forums. There's dozens of companies with paid support including mine.

You tell yourself you'll learn under better circumstances later, but eventually you have to realize that nobody is coming to save you.

The political situation is only getting worse. The data collection and the overreach from big tech is only further chipping away at your freedoms every day. You think you have Bitcoin, but without privacy you don't even own those private keys. You think you have a Nostr account, but you need open source operating system for that to have meaning. Otherwise, it's just the same as a big tech platform because Google, Microsoft, and Apple see your private key, your conversations, and the sum of every thought in your brain. They own your life.

But it doesn't have to be this way. I'm telling you that you have way more power than you realize. You're telling yourself you're not good with tech, but you're smart enough to read my words on Nostr now. That's better than like 95% of people out there. You know to an Amish farmer, you're pretty slick.. It's all about what you're used to.

Every one of the those starting statements is a lie. And the only obstacle is in your mind.

Love you bro, stay safe.

CAD software or games.

Checkmate.

I know nothing about C.A.D. software, but have you heard of Steam Onlinex? It's only been a thing for quite a while, and is very popular, and has a decent chunk of games.

Yes. I don't game, but steam works pretty well on some flavors of Linux. But... It's not the same as having an Xbox account or being able to natively run big titles.

I agree; some work even better on Linux because of Proton ✌️😏

There’s freecad but it takes a lot to learn a whole new system.

I'm very aware but no one can build a business with FreeCAD.

Why is that? Because no employees will know how to use it? Just curious. I haven’t even spent the time myself learning it.

Several reasons:

It's not fully developed.

It is very hard to learn.

It does not interface well with modern manufacturing systems/software. (This is the biggest issue.)

It has issues with real dimensionality (though this is getting better).

Just provide them the list of features you need and offer to sponsor their development. Run a crowdfunding if you wish so other people can pitch in with funding.

the steamdeck has made linux the most popular of all time for games

Cool.

Still doesn't fix CAD software.

blender

Is not CAD.

It can have some CAD features, but you cannot run a business making metal parts or injection molding off of it since it doesn't stack with anything else.

Ok, it's not perfect. You've identified the areas that need work. Do you volunteer to make it?

Pfft. No.

I don't and won't code. I build physical stuff.

At this point, the only reason I still have any big tech products or services is because of the networks I've built there. A lot of family refuse to communicate outside of Facebook or SMS. I also have a very pleasant community of people I talk to on Twitter. However, I take every opportunity to talk about freedom tech and the dangers of big tech's influence. I also tend to strongly delay my replies on Facebook, in an attempt to get family to move over to MeWe (which is basically a partially decentralized, privacy-friendly FB alt).

Good to hear you're making efforts. Just as a heads up, MeWe is on amazon or cloudflare, I forget which. MeWe is like saying "Instead of abolishing the Fed, we should have a different more reliable fed chairman". It's just trusting a different person.

Beyond nostr, there's also bastyon, farcaster, lens, and the fediverse

I use the fediverse every single day. pleroma-fe is a pleasure to use and it is better than every nostr client. I don't plan to stop using the fediverse. but it kind of sucks.

instances can block each other for any reason. this practice is so widespread that the fediverse is splintered into neighborhoods with very little overlap. the most censored neighborhood has the most public visibility. a person who is learning the fediverse for the first time is extremely likely to land on a mastodon instance with very heavy-handed moderation. they will not be able to see or interact with someone from a spicy pleroma instance just because their admin thinks everyone who disagrees with him is a neonazi. they pass around lists of "nazi" instances to defederate from some of which have been offline for three years or more and never even did anything wrong. I have even seen fediverse instances defederate over use of the word "stupid" because stupid is an ableist slur. if you somehow wind up in the less censored neighborhood you will see people use the n word every day just because that's the only place where they can. the fediverse is basically not even all one thing anymore.

have you tried ditto.pub ?

yes and I don't like soapbox. the only microblogging frontend that I ever really loved was pleroma-fe

in theory you should be able to use pleroma-fe with ditto but I am sure it hasn't been tested

yea i agree, that's why i'm here. but why don't the less retarded instances band together?

Yeah they're moving away from that centralized reliance on big tech though, so I'm okay with it personally lol

I see they are doing something with identity blockchain, but if you get banned, how can people reach you with this ?

They've mentioned that they'll be giving users access to their accounts' keys in the reasonably near future, that way they have full ownership and can migrate to a different "Social Web" app/service at any point. I'm guessing that will allow you to effectively become a nomad if you want, or just migrate to a different service if you get banned from one.

Can't say for sure, though.

It is a popular misconception that GIMP does the same than Adobe Photoshop. I guess it depends who you ask and what you need your photo editor for. For some easy editing, maybe. For professionals - no, not really. The capabilities of Adobe PS unfortunately are unmatched by long shot, regardless how much we would like it to not be true.

Version 3.0 with nondestructive editing is just around the corner (finally!). The beta is already available I've heard.

oh, Gimp does/did destructive editing?

what do you mean?

can you give an example of what can't be matched?

oh, I am sure that everything can be matched

just with an effort that professionals will not afford.

Unless, of course, things have moved very much since I was a more active photoshop wizz.

years back my hobby was into composite photography, combining 20+ elements from different photos into realistic composites resulting in 10GB+ files. Pure fun and frustration.

I tried to move to Linux and failed miserably, Gimp just was just not there. But - to all fairness - I am out of the loop. After all this time Photoshop just fits like a glove and every effort to go back to trying Gimp sounds like climbing a mountain.

You might have just prompted me to try again.

I’m totally on board with private messaging, private money, private document sharing, and am now trying to migrate to a more private phone.

The Linux thing though… That’s the toughest hurdle, at least for old folks like me.

I briefly looked into Linux like fifteen years ago. I remember at that time a lot of Linux people used a program called ‘vi’ which was their version of Notepad. The arcane keyboard commands required to perform simple tasks that would ordinarily be done with a quick mouse click or arrow key were such a turnoff. It wasn’t that the program was unlearnable; given enough time, I no doubt would’ve picked it up. It just seemed like whoever created that thing made it *intentionally* difficult to use.

I’m guessing that particular app isn’t a thing anymore, but the whole experience kind of gave me a mentality of, “Linux users like doing things the hard way.” Whether it was the expectation that users compile their own apps, or watching these guys repeatedly typing ‘sudo’ time after time before each command line operation, it felt like the Linux community as a whole just enjoyed making simple tasks unnecessarily difficult.

That said, it’s been nearly two decades and big tech has become a force for evil, surveillance, and censorship. Maybe it’s time to give Linux another look. Perhaps typing ‘sudo’ a few dozen times per day and memorizing an obscure keyboard combination to move the cursor up a line in my text editor is a small price to pay for a more secure and private operating system.

I think a good way to have the best of both is to have two computers and keep them totally separate. One only for work/normie stuff, one for everything else. Although not everyone can do this. Some dual boot and have different OSs on one computer.

That being said Linux has come a long way in respect to user-friendliness and modern feel. Linux Mint, PopOS, and ZorinOS come to mind in particular.

Vim (Vi improved) is still a thing for terminal junkies, however that is just one of the options available. Most "modern" Linux desktops have a simple GUI/visual application alternative available (Mousepad, Leafpad and many others). Using the terminal/console is entirely optional nowadays, it is the one thing that unifies all desktop environments!

One desktop environment might've a different application to install new apps, but all Ubuntu derivatives have the same console commands to achieve that. That's why solutions focus on the terminal, but again that's completely optional nowadays.

I've heard positive feedback from someone I've converted to Zorin OS, but I'd definitely look at different versions.

Hey you don't need "vi", it's total bullshit. I didn't learn it either. The people who push for that are stuck up.

You don't even need the command line. Linux Mint can be installed dual boot and easily learned in the graphical enviornment without commands.

Distro Tube and Chris Titus on youtube (via invidious) or odysee (via librarian) are great ways. Farside.link has the front-ends to those.

Have a look at Linux Mint. It is very beginner friendly. And it's personally what I choose to use for my system.

You can just buy a device with Linux preinstalled. That's how people get Windows and MacOS ;) If new is too expensive, try used devices.

Brands include #Purism, #Librem, #System76, #Tuxedo, #Slimbook, #Starlabs, #LaptopwithLinux, #Think Penguin, #MNTreform and many others.

Let's go people , ditch the windows it's spyware. Come on. Macos ain't far behind windows either.

Regardless of cli usage, just take an old computer and try it. Some UI/UX loss is worth beginning to take back control of your digital life.

It's also a safety issue; malware and other issues exist for Linux, yes, but you will be safer when you get away from the closed source ethos of window and mac.

Thanx for the reminder

Most people don't think it's worth the hassle. They think that the gov simply won't be interested in little them so they don't care.

They are wrong. And that is what needs to be changed in their understanding to convince them to switch

I’ve been learning Linux! Picked up a few books recently. Are there any other resources you’d highly recommend for newbies

Glad to hear you are looking to learn. Distro Tube and Chris Titus on youtube (via invidious) or odysee (via librarian) are great ways. farside.link has the front-end links

I got my first computer in 1998. It was a used laptop with Windows 95 on it. I was fascinated with encryption and I was soon lurking on the Cypherpunks mailing list. On there I learned the cool kids all used Linux. I wanted to be cool, so I tried to install Linux in dual boot mode on my computer. That messed up Windows and I couldn't get it reinstalled, so it's been Linux ever since. Linux was hard back then and I had to go to Linux user groups to learn how to use it. Today it's easy. I installed Linux Mint Mate on my tech clueless sister's computer and she had no trouble with it.

"the software you need IS on Linux: it has a a chat, and, um, a text redactor, and a photo editor"

my brother in Christ, people stay on windows not because they think linux doesn't have a browser, but because of the dozens of smaller programs and video games.

and I'm not trying to say windows is cool, I fucking hate windows.

Exactly what I needed to read ! Answered a bunch of questions I had. Thank you sir !
