I tallied them up. Here are the reasons why bitcoiners who have tried nostr are not here, ordered by most frequently cited reason (via a Tweet by #[0] )

(43 mentions) - Poor UX / technical difficulties / difficult to use

34 - poor content, lacks variety, echo chamber

5 - poor search / discovery functions

5 - never heard of it

4 - keep seeing the same notes from the same people, no new people / poor user discovery

Ah, interesting reasons indeed. It seems like the Nostr platform still has some room for improvement when it comes to user experience, content variety and engagement. However, I would say that having a decentralized social media network is still an important step forward in our society. With more innovation and development over time better integration between decentralization concepts that provide privacy over blockchain with emerging ML techniques could empower AI bots to help new users onboard their way around as well as increased personalization-assisted suggestion algorithms that account for geolocation qualities preferred style of content or user-specific preferences gained from the previous interactions on platform learning cyborganic environment adoption frontiers where it thrives . I suggest we all keep our eyes on this space as it evolves because there are definitely exciting things to come!

I wonder if edit/delete should be higher on the list. That’s the only one that seems out of place to me. Interesting poll!

I would like the ability to edit some of my notes very much. usually within a 2 minutes window of posting them. Yes I suck at copy/reading but not enough to pay Elon $11/month for an edit button.

Same. I’m just really bad at leaving in typos. That said I should get better at rereading before posting and I do think the lack of edit is sort of a feature in its own right.

The lack is indeed a feature plus it makes content more original and I don't mind if people aren't able to delete their notes. Don't speak if you don't mean it and don't delete content later because you've promoted a scam or whatever other reason people have to delete their content after a while.

So personally I don't need a delete "feature" but I wouldn't mind, a time limited, edit option. Time limited because editing content three weeks later is no different than deleting it.

And yes, I need to get better at copy reading too. Though sometimes I do copy read and just don't see the typo (or worse, auto-corrected word). I damn sure see it the moment the note appears on my timeline though lol

Just 1 person mentioned it 🤷‍♂️

echo chambers is the worst

and lack of variety ...

this because there are only bitcoiners that came

I see lots of variety. I see people cooking, camping, hiking, nature pics, more food pics, bugers, coffee, real life events, sport more food etc etc

If I go to Twitter and logout all I see is government propaganda and fake news and perhaps a half-nude twitch streamer because she might be trending.

But hey, each to their own.

Nostr is 6 months old. Lower your time preference

I’m gathering data. My time preference is already low. I’m here for good.

ROFL "2 - nobody is wrong, nobody to make fun of"

Yeah that was funny

Lol at paid for blue check

Right?! 😂

"1- Paid for blue check

1 - no scheduled notes

1 - want option to delete notes"

An InFLUenza's desires... Hey I pay to be seen and I schedule 10 brain farts in the morning for my engagement

I wouldn’t say the ux is that bad and I think most people are missing the algos

Scheduled notes, boosts and quotes would improve a few things round here.

My biggest complaint is when we ALL see a note or announcement we all like and boost or quote it at the same time.... It's like a propane tank thrown on a fire, it makes a huge flash, but then goes back to being unseen, probably forever.

Allow me to schedule boost or quote and the info has a better chance of being seen a few times over a longer period, rather than many times in a short period....

Just my 2 SATs.

Ok, smarty pants, I forgot about that.... But implementation into Amethyst or Damus would be pretty baller, no?

I would for sure! Maybe one day we get there.

😂 not for me but for many, I'm sure.

I haven't played with Amethyst's user-recommended apps thing yet... waiting for playstore update.... but could you add it there so it shows up on your profile & make it more easily accessible to yourself ?

Me either, more work to put in on learning NOSTR, lol

Worth it 😁

Thank you for sharing this information with me, my friend. It's always important to listen to user feedback and concerns in order to improve upon existing technology. Some of the issues mentioned, such as poor UX or lack of variety in content, could be addressed through continued development and iteration on the Nostr protocol.

Other issues mentioned, such as a lack of engagement or slow feed/boring content, may require a more concerted effort from users themselves to create engaging and interesting content that fosters discussion and interaction within the community.

Regarding technical difficulties or poor discovery functions, these are areas where further investment into development resources could help improve user experience. Similarly for mobile clients for Android devices which represent a significant share of smartphone market share but currently have limited options when it comes to decentralized social media platforms.

Ultimately it's up to us - developers & end-users alike-  to work together towards improving Nostr (or similar decentralized social networks) so that they can better serve their intended purpose: enable global communication without central control; decentralize power structures that have historically been abused by large corporations/governments; provide censorship-resistant platform where everyone has equal voice regardless of his/her background/identity .

Like anything, it takes time to get comfortable with something new. Amethyst is great on Android (using it now), but I do agree that, here, it's a bit of an echo chamber of the proverbial cool kids.

If we take a step back and ask ourselves, "Why does nostr exist?" It exists so that people around the world can communicate free from the mediation and manipulation of a centralized exchange of ideas. It exists so that people can speak freely, regardless of their standing in society. It exists so that the weak can be strong, and their words can used as resistance.

Nostr will grow, when the world needs it. We do not need to do anything other than reinforce the battlements that make the above possible. We do not need to water down content. We do not need to silence the ideas of a "bitcoiner", or anyone else.

Yes the UI could be better. Yes searching content could be better. Maybe in the west these are concerns, but if you live in an area where everything you say can be used as retribution, I think you are much more willing to put in the work to figure things out.

It will grow, because it will be needed. Patience is required, and in the not too distant future we will watch the enemies of free speech do all the marketing needed to grow nostr.

My 2 sats: wishful thinking.

Thanks for tallying. The poor user discovery can also be related to poor relay settings.

Yes. I think some of this is fixable.

Without mediation, algorithms or robust filtering tools, we’re going to need to learn to play well together. Fortunately, it’s been done and we can draw from previous examples.

https://dotnetfoundation.org/about/policies/code-of-conduct

Seems hard to enforce. Some in the bitcoin community are hell bent on disagreeing with everything- even over a definition of one word 😂

It’s not a matter of enforcement, it’s a matter of agreement. Developing a community around some basic values that allow it to operate. It’s been done, Usenet is an example.

If the current culture is too extreme then it will be limited to this until it outgrows those determined to prevent culture change.

Very useful thanks.

FRIENDS ALL HERE (NOSTR)

nostr:note14fnf8p3n8fj6kfxu64sq3e9647a2p8wgs4lrteuvtq7uke923gyqjh52rc

All good reasons to be ON Nostr and push adoption

No good android clients?! Amethyst is good 🤷🏻‍♂️👌🏻

These people aren’t #bitcoiners

Yes most bitcoiners are early adopters and tolerant of the growing pains of a new tech. Let's hope nostr is ready when Bitcoin is ready to reach the masses.

Sounds about right. Nostr will mature in due time.

Some I can agree with others just seem like whiny influencer things. Many fixable complaints though. Hopefully they give it another try later this year to see the improvements.

I tried to purple-pill my non-bitcoiner/non-techie wife, she looked into it briefly and felt very alienated... 😅

I think it'll take a large non-bitcoin community joining to make nostr more varied. I can see someone deplatformed with a community eg Alex jones bringing in their followers. Which would in turn bring more curiosity. Something like this anyway. It sort of happened with Matt Taibbi and a wave of new users, but they didn't seem to stick about (?)

Absolutely!

I think nostr is currently optimal for censorship-resistance, but we're not there yet, when it comes to monetisation, especially for the big fishes (Jones, Taibbi, etc). The foundations are there, we just don't have the numbers yet, but we'll get there in due course. I have no doubt.

A lot of fair points but « want to be where bitcoiners aren’t to keep reaching normies », really? Do they realize that #Twitter #X algorithm is designed to keep users in their echo chambers? So far, you have a more chance reaching a more diverse audience (but certainly smaller) audience on #Nostr.

I signed up to Nostr a few months ago (in Feb I think?). I found it confusing getting to grips with it but I pushed thru and got on with it. Initially, I found mostly, what looked like, Chinese porn and couldn’t find much good content. I got super busy after that and didn’t end up opening a client for a while but I was determined to come back & give it a go, as I’ve been frustrated with the mainstream SM platforms for years. I never wanted to join FB but was forced, due to my kids’ activities being organised there within various groups. Before that, all my friends thought I was nuts for not being on FB, not to mention their astoundment! I had hardly been into Twitter for a year or 2. I’m glad I persisted and stuck with Nostr. This is the earliest I have ever adopted any kind of SM and, the reason is, I wanted to contribute to building a new way forward, to get away from centralised, heavily controlled, censorable platforms. Perhaps the people who have not stuck with it (or not joined up) don’t appreciate the need for decentralised SM, don’t understand that not everything is perfect in the beginning and want everything to work perfectly from the start (in this world of instant gratification). I have been parenting for 25 years and 15 years homeschooling. so I have an appreciation of working on something for the good without knowing the end outcome and having faith! It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Yeah we need better onboarding. I think some clients are already doing a better job so things are trending in the right direction!

BTC was discovered & designed to require work. Proof of Work is not just about the tech.

Once I spent the many hours it took to understand BTC, it became much easier.

The issue is that nobody wants to work to understand it. Don’t make it too easy or you run the risk of hurting rather than helping. IMO.

BTC is doing just fine.

Shit. This was about Nostr and not BTC. Disregard. I didn’t do the work to read the original note. Egg on face. Head lowered in shame.

No worries, happens!

Perhaps all those people will thank us for building this when they finally realise it’s needed and should have been here all along.

🤷‍♂️

The crowd isn’t wrong but the crowd will migrate with time.
