The article everyone is a scammer by Bitstein comes to mind in regards to coinkite. Seedsigner is not trying to sell you anything, free and open source that anyone can assamble from multiple sources.
Well that's the manufacturer recommendation. But it's like a dealership, you really should get that oil changed more frequently.

All analogies eventually break down but I think a pen makes a good analog for a signer. It documents/conveys info and can generate signatures, but when passed from user to user it doesn't retain info about what the last user did.
