I'm about to drive across the country and want gps directions and the ability to find stuff along myway. I don't want Google play services.

Magic earth.
Never tried it. Usually use Organic Maps but finding stuff along the way will be spotty with OpenStreetMaps data. I fall back to Google maps web then put that into organic maps as needed.
Magic Earth is pretty good if you know the address of where you're going already. Then you can download maps offline, which is kind of nice, but as far as discovering what's around you, I still have to use Google Maps on the web, which is what it is unfortunately.
I need to get better about adding the things that I had to look up. Be the change you want to see in the world as they say.
New one to me. I'll check it out.

Organic Maps if you require FOSS.
its that "ability to find stuff" thats the deal breaker.
if you just want street data, +1 for Organic maps.
but you cant beat google for lists of places.
