A few months ago, I was offered a promotion.

My pay would increase by ~8%, while my responsibilities would pretty much double, and the stress level would increase meaningfully.

Not to mention my schedule would be much more restrictive, compared to the very flexible one I already have.

My answer was a simple NO.

But why? I could've stacked more Bitcoin, right?

Yeah, sure. You could say that...

But I expect the purchasing power of my Bitcoin savings to grow at a minimum of 20% per year, for the next 10 years.

It really isn't worth it, when you look at it that way.

Saving in Bitcoin puts you in a financial situation where you're not desperate for promotions.

Have you had a similar experience?

yeah, it changes your perspective a lot because you start thinking about the longer arc of the story, that's what low time preference means

this is why money printer go brrr - to stop people thinking about the long arc of the story, so they are easier to control and manipulate

think about a street hustler, if you ever have been in such a situation, one of the primary tactics they use is to create a sense of urgency, that action must be taken now, rather than later, and you thus have less time to think about the broader implications of your decision

when you think about it more, you make a better decision because you have made a simulation of the situation in more detail and realise that what seemed important in the short term was damaging in teh long term

Yeah, that's exactly right, but you also need to be looking at the "opportunity" from a place of strength, not weakness.

Without savings and living paycheck-to-paycheck, you become more high time preference.

Bitcoin truly offers you freedom to make good choices, if you save in it for the long term. It's so refreshing and rewarding.

yeah, the boostrap is hard though... i had over 14 bitcents at one point last year, now i'm back to fractions again

you can really feel the loss of optionality when you get a decent stack together and then spend it... it's brutal

I had a pretty similar situation, difficult to say no to though, I feel like it puts your current position in jeopardy

For me, the tiny amount of extra money really wasn't worth the stress, effort, responsibility, and schedule change really wasn't worth it.

I quit my job to start my business knowing I would make less money to stack sats for the first few years. The freedom and overall enjoyment in what I'm doing is well worth the trade off.

What I know is that it all changes if you’re paid in bitcoin.

Hell yea I love it

Much better to have better peace of mind and less stress while bitcoin does all the extra leg work for you.

Smart decision boss

It's very challenging when you have responsibilities and obligations to make decisions that seem like a step back at first glance...but in reality it turns out that taking that extra time to put things in perspective (and saving sats) does yield better results. I left an office job for a "blue collar" post and it was the best thing for my mental health and spirit...still stacked sats and didn't even feel the salary drop.

Yes, absolutely. Glad to hear you made the right decision for yourself too 🧡

Having this exact dilemma right now, offered a considerable advancement which a few years ago I would have seen as the realisation of years of graft. Instead I see it as 1) a potential escape from the boredom. Could be a challenge! 2) loads more stress and shit I could do without and no longer care about

If it's something you're passionate about, maybe it could be worth it. For me, it really wasn't, because I'm not passionate about the job. It just pays the bills and buys me Bitcoin 😄
