Because historically relays self-certifying to be good hasn't worked out. :(

People love to break stuff, like by creating a new relay full of dick pick posts and publishing info that looks good.

thats not how nip66 works. you follow the right monitors that you, believe in... type thing. a monitor can publish info about as many relays as it wants, and thats convenient because you can decide if it is a good match for you.

Right, but new users don't trust anyone yet. We can't make them decide on a monitor.

why would be deciding on a relay worse than deciding on a monitor?

a single monitor, could be given to a fren, and have the tags for each type of relay.. and populate choice list and even geoloc, stats! it would be amazing. i will not be onboarding frens to the firehose anylonger

Point taken

to see it in action or to get hyped up, check out next.nostr.watch , monitors, find monitorlizard or any other monitor, select box, then back to relays.

its cool from many perspectives but as a systems nerd i am loving having monitors that can ping and report results, like, hey youre down on the east coast or etc 😁 people pay big bucks for distributed monitoring like this and its just one tiny aspect of why nip66 is 🔥
