I'm open to any airtight explanations of why this was impossible, but I don't think one exists.

If there is a video of his ear being damaged prior to him putting his hand over it I would be certain this isn't the case.
Short of that I have no way of knowing.

That’s why I manage information in that way - it’s so hard to know what’s true these days (even directly after the fact, but this is the best I can do) it becomes important to document things immediately.
A year from now, there will be a cemented narrative with approved media. Having clips you know personally were actually from that day and that aren’t doctored is helpful.

If you don’t believe Trump was shot, you can propose another explanation.. and there have been lots of early rumors that he was cut with glass fragments from the teleprompter glass, but all became debunked in time.
The teleprompter explanation doesn't make any sense, nor does it change the nature of the event, but yes absolutely. If I saw a video of trumps ear damaged before he put his hand on it I'd say there's no other explanation.
I'f find it very hard to believe a regular shutter speed would capture a flying bullet in mid air though.

Shutter speed was 1/8000th of a second, all of us were shocked to see it streaming through the frame.

A guy on a roof definitely fired shots in the direction of trump and hit members of the crowd killing one of them. Your possibility assumes that Trump was happy for this to happen because he needed this assassination attempt despite leading handily in the polls (which understated his electoral performance in 2016 and 2020) post debate.
