Yep, this is why I keep arguing that media shouldn't be considered a core part of Nostr. Nostr's censorship resistence works best when relays don't have to worry about CSAM. Can you believe that some people want Blossom servers running over Tor? I don't think that benefits anyone.
Discussion
How would blossom over Tor not benefit anyone? That is a cool idea. Keep everything over Tor
Every other decentralized tech handles uploads.
Because CSAM is pretty much the ONLY content that actually needs it. Even loli porn has managed to find clearnet web hosts that can host it. If all I wanted was to view CSAM then I certainly wouldn't need Nostr for that.
I believe that clearnet web hosting is already more than sufficient for Nostr's needs, and that involving Tor just creates extra effort and extra liability.
Ok....case and point.....Brazil Censorship. Tor helps you get around censorship....
Brazilian politicians are just clueless boomers. I don't know what it's like in the States, but here it feels like your grandad is trying to stop you from using your phone by putting it on top of a cupboard.
On top of that, Brazilians are pretty savvy, and even with sky-high taxes (like Denmark levels, over 50%), tax evasion is also really high.
Casinos are wrecking government lotteries, stablecoins are dodging regulations, VPNs have skyrocketed after Alexandre de Moraes' Twitter crackdown, and Bitcoin is on the rise.
Brazil hasn't turned into just another failed state in Latin America because a lot of people are evading taxes. The more the government tries to impose something, the more the people learn to get around it.
Maybe that's why we haven't turned into Argentina or Venezuela; people are just used to hating politicians.
Tor CLIENTS, not Tor SERVERS. Host the content in America and access it through Tor. Don't host it over Tor.
Then you are leaving Tor too much to see content
I don't understand. You can view the clearnet over Tor. That's what exit nodes are for: to exit the Tor network. Is that what you mean by leaving Tor?
ROFL you Americans!
Come over here and find out what other kinds of content "actually need it". Tell everyone you meet that COVID vaccines suck and abortion is bad. Maybe announce that the Iranian Revolutionary guards have mad speedboat skillz.
And then you can visit Thailand, and call their king a decadent pimp.
Just don't host it there then??? Instead of me coming over to Australia and specifically trying to host content in a country that's going to want me dead for it, why don't you use a Tor CLIENT to come over here where we can host everything on the clearnet without the need for Tor SERVERS? I believe that specifically .onion Blossom servers are a waste of Nostr's time. Tor for any other platform and Tor for any other use is awesome.
I do always use Tor clients to access US-based Nostr services. Thanking y'all, but sometimes people want to host their own servers.
Do you imagine your US-based datacenters are not going to share everything about me with my government if asked?
For non-Americans, #tor is the way.
Yes? There are plenty of servers that even let you pay with Monero. So long as they aren't hosting CP, and so long as they let the NSA spy on everything you use that VPS for, I don't think there is anything preventing a VPS from offering their services to any random person on the internet.
I love datacenters that let me pay with Monero, that's the other half of the equation.
The NSA will simply tell my government what my server is hosting, if it is political content.
My government will then threaten to confiscate the US-based datacenter's Australian assets, if they have any. Or apply to courts in allied nations to do the same.
Yes, there are smaller providers with no assets outside the USA and with admins who never travel. I salute those, but relying on them to "hold up the sky" is madness.
Tor media servers, already!
Yes, the NSA will be after your ass if they ever find out you are Australian. But how would they ever find out?
If I pay with Monero via Tor, they'll really struggle with that :)
Getting access logs will give them my visitors, though. And holding the hosting provider's assets at risk will allow them to shut me down or implant malware.
I offer Blossom over Tor and relays over tor

I added your relay a few days ago, thanks man!
Gotta read up on how to use Blossom, too...
