I give nostr and near-0 chance of failure, but only because zaps are a thing.

It’s not clear to me that an open protocol on its own is big enough incentive for it to prosper over existing alternatives. Logically, it should be, but in practice - not definitive. See signal. It managed to grab some users from WhatsApp but remains overall a niche product. Sad fact is that majority of people don’t value privacy to the same extent as convenience.

However, with zaps, nostr is lighter fluid for creator economy and the spread of lightning and ultimately bitcoin. It’s the purple Trojan horse. The IV bag for orange pill delivery. You could argue that the opposite is equally true. They are a symbiotic duo - Batman and Robin or if Batman joined forces with Superman.

Not only does “zapped up” nostr give ultimate power to creators, but it also enables collaboration, sharing and participation from anyone and everyone. It’s the ultimate network effect. It enables dynamic value sharing not possible before. Best of all, it’s 100% permissionless, inclusive and … unstoppable.

The question then becomes not “will nostr survive?” But “how fast will it grow”?

I think the answer to that depends on a few things:

1. How fast do we improve the overall UX of the clients

2. Ability to introduce new types of use cases

3. The rate at which existing platforms or up and coming popular platforms integrate with nostr and zaps.

4. Ability to introduce fiat on and off ramps

We know what needs to happen for better UX - this is just a matter of time and more talent entering the arena.

New use cases are already being worked on and many more will be introduced in the coming months.

Existing platforms are unlikely to let go of existing monetization methods. Putting more financial power into users hands means less control over revenue streams - especially if they depend on advertising. Sure, smaller companies and those more ambitious will lead the way but the behemoths are unlikely to waver.

The previous point also hinders the fiat on/off ramps. But, it’s not a dealbreaker because newer companies can and will enter the arena. In fact, giant companies may have no choice but to play ball. The question is - when?

To take a 1000 mile view from above, what is going to help adoption of both technologies?

1. Our ability to maintain momentum. I have full confidence in this because bitcoiners are leading the way and we always play the long game and nothing will deter us.

2. Inclusion - our willingness to welcome everyone no matter their background or preference we may not agree with. Even if their profit motives or monetization methods are not in line with our values, having a more diverse user base is good. Focus on the things we agree on.

3. Scaling improvements, discovery UX. All a matter of time imo.

4. Integration with existing services. We’ll have to start slow on this one.

That’s all I have to say for now. Keep in zapping, building, thinking, debating, coming up with solutions 💪

Haters gonna hate. Notice how even bitcoiners declared nostr a fad despite it being around for a few years now. They see one wave and form an opinion on the tide of the ocean. Rookie mistake.

Peace ✌️

Batman and Superman. 🎯

Great stuff sir 🫡⚡️

Love what you did here! ⚡️❤️⚡️

Zaps monetize what users were giving out for free. It will change everything.

This is 🔥

let's keep zapping, building, together

💯 Zappy ⚡️ zap zap!

But I wanna use my zaps at McDonald’s and still cant

I agree with you very much. Nostr is not a fashion spray, but a revolutionary wave. It does not lie in the complex services of its application, but in the fact that this product captures people's core needs. I am also developing products to make my contribution to building #Nostruniverse #Nostr

“Bitcoin lets you own your wealth, Nostr lets you own your mind. ”

Bitcoin+ Nostr =freedom.

💜 really appreciate it! 🫂

Our hearts are connected my friend 💜🫂

Great piece here. I agree. These are early days, I'm trying to find people producing content I want... the search is mine, that's the liberating part!

Thanks for the writeup and thinking this through. But let’s not take this so seriously. Keep this in mind “The most entertaining outcome is the most likely”. As long as we keep it entertaining, more people will join and soon that will lead to the next thing. NIP-58 is going to be the next big thing..! We are already building it..!

Back in December putting lightning invoice on the note was a big thing. Now hardly anyone uses it. Now everyone is on Zap. In a month it will be Badges. So as long as we keep it entertaining and going… we will win…!

I think your main thesis that a social network with a built in monetary layer to enable Creators is good- overall we are seeing a trend toward subscription across the board, from substack to twitter itself.

One issue: other platforms court investment capital/advertisers who are used to under write come content, especially at the beginning.

Here we essentially do not have that at present- whereas Twitter is planning to revenue share advert money with creators. Substack did similar stuff to attract key creative talent.

Advertising is a big question mark.

I personally dislike the kind of incentives and content pressure it creates- I'm a big substack fan for that reason- subscription creates better content. It's certainly not the biggest but signal to noise ratio is excellent.

I don’t think zaps will completely displace subscriptions. You can very well have subscription services on top of content zapping.

Other platforms will do the marketing for nostr just as Twitter did for mastadon and a bit for nostr already.

Exciting times - you guys are all at the tip of the tech spear but for those like me who are here, there is a lot to learn and this takes time and desire. To all you great og content makers, keep pumping and as the fiat funded twitter world continues to restrict the freedoms of the plebs, nostr will pulse purple like a beacon and the harbour will fill up and the merriment will be popping!

Nostr needs everyone, techy or not. So much to do here!

So how does Nostr generate revenue to remain operational? Makes me wonder if there other applications than payments and social media. What about election voting?

Commerce, subscriptions

Great note,

I think there is a subtle mindset shit going on, it’s not us v’s fiat any more. Forget fiat, just build. Don’t worry about replacing the global financial system. Build to coexist with fiat and just outcompete it over two generations.

I’m going to stop using the term “fiat” and start calling it “local currency”. That’s what it is. It’s small and limited.

💯

Also, love the typo 😆

Whoops 😬

Thanks for the zaps! Zaps like these build follows and networks. 😉

No other social media can build networks this way. ⚡️ are the fifth dimension.

I agree fiat is nothing special but a little early to call it little or local
