Would it even matter if mosquitos stopped existing? (Real question) #asknostr

everything exists for a reason my friend. we shouldn't get involved in the natural order of things

But yeah I do wonder if maybe mosquitos are the exception lol. Are they a good source for something more useful? Like literally what would happen to the natural world ecosystem if they just vanished?

they brought back dinosaurs in jurassic park lol

Correct lol

I did feel sorry for them a little bit after this video lol

They have been useful in medical research? 🤔

killing innocent people has been useful in research too, one might say

a stopped clock also tells the right time twice a day too

Mosquitos kill many humans. Afaik they've killed more humans than any other species did, even humans.

Even if it would tip off some delicate balance in nature, if we could, we would've eradicated them long time ago. We just can't, they're too many.

Yeah not saying in any practical way. Just theoretically what would happen if they stopped existing. Doesn't anything rely on their existence?

Hm, Ensure that people do not spread too much?

From perplexity, sorry for my laziness.

Completely eliminating mosquitoes could have several negative ecological consequences:

1. Disruption of food chains: Many animals rely on mosquitoes as a food source, including birds, bats, fish, frogs, and other insects. Removing mosquitoes could impact these species' populations[1][4].

2. Loss of pollination: While not as efficient as bees, mosquitoes do serve as pollinators for some plants. Their elimination could affect certain plant species[4].

3. Ecosystem imbalance: Mosquitoes play a role in various ecosystems, particularly in aquatic environments. Their larvae serve as filter feeders and help convert organic matter[2]. Removing them could disrupt these ecological processes.

4. Unknown ripple effects: Given the complexity of ecosystems, eliminating mosquitoes could have unforeseen consequences that cascade through food webs and ecological relationships[4][5].

5. Potential behavioral changes in other species: For example, large grazing animals might alter their grazing patterns if biting insects were eliminated, potentially impacting vegetation in certain areas[4].

6. Loss of biodiversity: There are over 3,000 mosquito species, many of which don't bite humans or transmit diseases. Eliminating all mosquitoes would reduce overall biodiversity[1].

While mosquito control is important for human health, complete eradication could have significant ecological impacts. Many experts suggest targeted control of disease-carrying species rather than total elimination[2][3].

Love it!

i think theyre just snacks for these guys https://www.orkin.com/pests/mosquitoes/what-eats-mosquitoes

In Florida they’ve genetically modified a mosquito that makes mosquito offspring infertile and are releasing them into the wild. They presume that this will reduce future mosquito populations by an order of magnitude if not multiples.

We didn’t have such genetic tools available to us in the past

Interesting 👀

and if we are students of the past we know these blossum into unavoidable side effects, collateral damage; problem ends up worse than started

Well, it’s possible you’re right, but surely someone said the same thing about vaccines for things like small pox and polio, so the past doesn’t necessarily agree with your opinion

so true. Weve been at war with the florida mosquito for a few years now

Just move to the mountains in Switzerland

This is not true. It was called DDT

since we all have to put up with them most likely whatever they do has some benefit to us that would change things, i dunno if it would be any real loss

most organisms are better off without parasites, otherwise they would be symbiotes

parasites are just exploiting vulnerabilities, and if the vulnerabilities are fixed then the parasite has no niche anymore, and woild die out

Every creature has it's purpose in our eco system. We sometimes have not figured it out yet. Like with bitcoin, if you become connected with nature, you get another viewpoint at a lot of things happening around you. Just open your eyes and mind.

I really ducking hate mosquitos

I'm allergic 🫠
