This chart doesn't prove people who start with custodial services don't learn self custody. I started on coinbase. Today well over 99% of my #bitcoin is self custody and none of it is on coinbase. I do self custody lightning and on chain. I only use a custodial wallet for zaps. Thanks to #zapathon well over 99% of my transactions are custodial so I look like part of the problem by this metric.
This chart proves that majority of people are using custodial lightning wallets that are being recommended everywhere ! The rugginng will be a thing until self custody improves !
Only transaction count. There is no evidence I've seen that anyone is using custodial lightning services as a savings account. Zaps are the same little bit of bitcoin getting passed around at high speed forever.

I think that fractions of a penny don't require the same amount of security and paranoia that your hodl does. You selected metrics from the most no care use of sats there is.
Some bathing suits I've owned have a little mesh pocket on the inside of the waistband. I am comfortable putting a folded $20 bill in there, in case I want a sno-cone or something. If the ocean decides it's gonna take that $20, so be it...I accept the risk for the functionality it offers.
Not gonna put my life savings in that little pocket, though.

Important distinction between transaction number and transaction volume. Say someone makes 100 transactions/month, totalling 10m sats, maybe 95 of them are on a custodial lightning wallet, and 5 are lightning or on-chain self-custody transactions. However, those 95 custodial transactions might only have been for 100k sats, and the sovereign transactions were 9.9m sats.
"Usage" needs to be further explored.
