I'm wanting to try this this year

If I can help let me know.

Any recommendations for plans

Is this the plan you used?

Basically. I'm too stupid to actually follow directions.

I have this issue as well

Same

I think this was just the thing I needed to figure out how to reduce the overall costs for my new flock this year. Thank you very much!

Fantastic. My work here is done.

What is the purpose of this device?

The correct answer is chicken feed.

How does it work?

The flies come in and lay eggs in the corrugated plastic. Eggs hatch and fall into the food waste at the bottom. Then they crawl up the side pipes and out into a bucket. This is the theory anyway.

What is this?

It is for attracting black soldier flies to lay eggs. Then the larva climbs out into a bucket. Then they get fed to the chickens.

Never made one, but we have a bin for mealworms that works well.

Hell yeah that’s going to be a little protein factory

How are they supposed to find their way out?

They climb up the tube ramps

Smart bugs. Hats off to them

As far as I understand it they can't pupate unless they find soil. Therefor they climb out.

They might struggle to riggle up the T-join on their way out.

Hopefully they go up the ramp and out.

Please keep us posted on how this works!

Absolutely

Do you think you'll need a drain? I just picked up some supplies today to put one together. I didn't think about drainage. I was just reading a suggestion about adding a drain. Are you going to add larvae? I know nostr:nprofile1qqspw3wnkey67gwkv689fv9gl2jdj9uytdguxkewg5hvn4lrltcj6wgppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0q64zf8 was selling some last year.

Good question. I could throw one in.

Flaw #1: Is empty!

Trying to sort that out now.

Looking good! I’ve never built one myself, let us know how it works out once it’s in production

Will do

I think the Black soldier flies will need somewhere to lay eggs over the food. I think wrapping cardboard around the fly inlet under the cover might give them a place to lay eggs. How do you plan to complete their circle of life? Can you heat up PVC and bend/warp the pipe to be tighter to the sides. They might wiggle between the pipe and wall.

There is corrugated plastic under the intake.

Ok. I see that now. I thought I read that if the holes are vertical it is more natural for them. I cut cardboard into 3 inch strips and then rolled it up like a fruit by the foot and wired it together. Gives a lot of holes to use in the same space as the flat surface.

That's a great idea

Needs a drain and one that will not get clogged easily. Maybe in dry climates you don't need one but mine would fill with liquid. In Florida

Cheers. I added an 1.5" drain.
