the problem isn't only the complexity and friction, it's the involuntary, cohersive nature. if a community of people get together and agree upon guidelines they'll follow - or else opt out of the benefits one receives from following the guidelines - that's a great thing.
that is very different than the interactions of two consenting parties - when their interaction only involves the two of them - being controlled and constrained against their wishes by some 3rd party regulator or group of neighbors.
