What is a blasphemy law?

E.g. in many Islamic countries you can't speak badly of Muhammad on pain of death.

Ah yeah. With all due respect, fuck that. Controlling people's speech like that is definitely not something I stand for.

what about separation of church and state?

Not sure, but probably not

so the taliban is okay? the iranian regime too?

#[3] , going for the jugular. 😅

nah, i’m just intrigued, i love controversial opinions, it creates conversation.

🍿

This is why you’re the best. And why Nostr is the best.

I also love controversial and hard conversations and the fact that we can have those here, full of all the nuance, means a lot to me.

Nostr proves that people are pretty tolerant in general

exactly! it’s the best. conversation without resentment or arrogance.

“It’s okay if it is my belief is in power and force other people to act, talk and think like me! If it is some other belief than mine is in power then: FREEDOM!”

I don't think so, but I worship a different God

i’m not muslim btw. i practice Zoroastrianism.

our forefathers colonized the usa for the freedom of religion, not one religion should be able to control the masses.

I'm really of two minds on this. I kind of think an absolute Christian monarch ruling according to libertarian principles is the sweet spot, but I know that's weird.

yeah it’s nice to dream, but that just can’t be america! it would defeat the whole purpose on what this country was made for! maybe there’s another place that can happen?

That, or America will have to change. Why Liberalism Failed is a pretty good book on this topic.

so, you can’t be in america if you’re not christian?

No, America is for everyone, but that's the point, everyone apparently includes some pretty corrosive people and systems, which makes it hard to sustain the project

The idea that the US is a “melting pot” is a complete fabrication. US immigration policy was originally designed to preserve a cohesive culture based on ethnic and cultural factors of the existing population.

Even if that’s correct it only works as long as your guy is in power. Once you centralize power it’s going to get really bad for you once you inevitably lose control of the power.

Yes, but in a non-monarchy you have a "your guy" still, he's just a party or nobility or committee. A monarchy appears more centralized than it is, a democracy appears less centralized than it is. Case in point, our "uniparty".

Agreed, I’m also curious about monarchy after reading Democracy: The God that Failed but my main point is that I don’t want to have to care who’s in power because their personal preferences shouldn’t majorly impact my life. Everyone wants to shape the world to their liking but very few want their world to be shaped to someone else’s liking. The best long term solution is to decentralize power to the individuals and guard against the myopia of centralization.

I can co-sign that I think

No king but Christ?

Technically...

🤣

That's a cop out

🌶️

“[B]lasphemy laws are probably a good thing.”

“. . . libertarian principles . . . .”

🤔

Yeah, I haven't figured it all out yet

This ruling style will surely exist somewhere and that place will have a unique form of strength.

The days of large states controlling massive land area are numbered. No way to have one ruler for 100M+ people moving forward. That's a good thing.

Allows for more experimentation, more voting with your feet, more alignment with personal values, and less conflict between rulers and subjects.

This

Who would be good candidates for benevolent Christian monarch?

Mostly dead people tbh, Christian monarchy is a lost art. Clarence Thomas? Ron Paul? (I know, not Christian, but still)

Mike Pence?

😬

I would live under King Paul, but not his son 😂

PV ☦️👑

Same

This almost sounds like the Kingdom of God, which the Bible says will be present on the new Earth at the return of Christ, and over which He will personally rule...

I had to go check up libertarian.

Which forefathers are you talking about? If you mean the pilgrims this is not correct. Both they and the English before them attempted to convert the natives to Christianity.

was that a good thing in your opinion?

Not necessarily. The carrot is almost always better than the stick.

Some context:

The declaration of independence is literally an appeal to God.

Separation of church and state is the govt staying out of the church's business not the other way around.

While it is not and has never been a requirement to be Christian, the underlying values written into the original constitution and it's early amendments are clearly Christian values.

I don't think so. I think people should just respect each other's beliefs. Public shaming is always an option.

who define blasphemy? I can just pretend that for my religion the word "nostr" is blasphemy

Yep

Fuck all rulers. I want no monarchy, and no oligarchy. Certainly not one driven by an ideology based on the mythical retranslated words of a Jewish guy 2000 years ago who's worshiped by white people with a habit of killing everyone who don't fall in line until history shifts and they can play morally superior and act suppressed.

But that's just me.

And that's ok 🫂

And as long as we can all peacefully disagree, we can be frens!

🫂
