Tattoos are a pagan self-mutilation ritual
π€
oh damn
... thats precisely one of the reasons why they are quite profound and interesting. Anything can be taken to ridiculous / tasteless / purposeless... however... most things have a deeper meaning than the one that modern humans accept / understand they have because modern man is severely disconnected from its deep past.
That's not controversial π
Christianity is a pagan ritual
False by definition, Christianity is actually anti-pagan

Depends on the flavor of Christianity. Catholicism and those who believe in the Trinity generally worship a pantheon of deities and perform complex rituals to honor them. But that'll offend the Christians so they'll find another way to define everybody else as pagans like it's a bad thing.
Offend *ignorant* Christians.
Sorry had to get that in there. β€οΈ
Proud patron of my local pagan store. Best incense island herbal medicine in town. π₯
And I would be amiss to not point out that not all Christians are like that, just the loud ones β₯οΈ Thanks for not being one of the reasons that's what most former Christians (like me) feel π
Here. Iβll help offend some.
Abram was Sumerian and worshipped the god El, of that pantheon. He had a consort named Asherah, (remember those Asherah poles in the OT??) and several kids.
Judaism is literally a child of Sumerian religion, and theyβve been fighting amongst followers of Elβs siblings and children for most of history.
From that Christianity is born.
All religious people are pagans.
So are many hunters. But thatβs different.
Post hoc non ergo propter hoc. If there is a true God, he would obviously predate both religions. So the question is, which religion portrays him more faithfully β the one where the god does human stuff, or the one where he does divine stuff?
The one that isn't a religion at all, but where someone spiritually follows the most pure form of reverence to life and community possible for them.
There are many many arguments to be made here, all of which have been hashed out over millennia.
I am a Roman Catholic. I believe very much. But I enjoy playing devils advocate both to remind my brethren that at the end of the day all we have is faith, and to let the non-believers know weβre not all convinced of our innate superiority in our understanding of βthe truth.β Thatβs pretty off putting to a lot of people.
Jesus said, βAlways be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence.β The last part is often lacking.
But supposing I continue to play this role, I would argue both that there is no reason to believe that a God who created us in his image would not have many traits in common with us, and even if we rule out the gods who donβt, itβs still multiple choice.
I would also like to take a moment to ponder how awesome having intellectual and mutual conversations like this on Nostr really is.
β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
To you both.
My personal opinion is not that there is no "God" but that the very concept is more broad and all-encompassing that any one human or group can grasp. I respect every system of belief as long as they respect mine and other without aggression. Because I think all are at least partially correct, and any that believe they understand all that encompasses the origins and destination of what we experience as life are blinded by hubris. β₯οΈ
What is the nature of the damage? I donβt quite understand.
Every modern religion was based proto-shamanistic beliefs (especially Christianity). Eternal life, resurrection, healing of the sick, visions, prophecy, etc. 'Self-mutilation' rituals can be considered symbolic to dissolve the self and opening oneself up to the interconnectedness of the one great spirit.
Jesus was the ultimate shaman. Did not Jesus say we can do works greater than he? (John 14:12)

Why Christianity especially? Throughout the Bible you see God calling his people out of the pagan nations surrounding Israel, and in the new testament you get the same thing in places like 1 Corinthians. At the least, Christianity was a reaction against shamanism, if not a restoration of true religion.
Christianity especially because Jesus exemplifies several shamanistic archetypes:
- Healing of the sick
- Acting as a medium/conduit between spirit and the material
- Descent to the underworld and returning (1 Peter 4:6 | Ephesians 4:9)
- The use of sacrament as a tool and symbol to commune with the higher
- Sacrifice of the material world for the betterment of the tribe (people)
The same, and others, can be said for other messiahs, saviors, and gods of mythos.
But his claim goes far beyond that β he explicitly denies shamanism: "no one comes to the father except through me". In other words, according to the Bible the shamanic is a cheap imitation of the truth, which is embodied in the person of Jesus.
The etymology of the word Christ in Sanskrit and Greek is very interesting.
"When an Indian person calls on Krishna, he often says, Krsta. Krsta is a Sanskrit word meaning attraction. So when we address God as Christ, Krsta, or Krishna we indicate the same all-attractive Supreme Personality of Godhead. When Jesus said, 'Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be Thy name', the name of God was Krsta or Krishna."

If one were to imagine Christ as something larger than an individual man (Jesus) an energy or a consciousness, is it therefore possible one may come to the Father through another vector of that same Christ energy? It may not look *physically* as Jesus did, or rather how we imagine him to have looked.
Sure, you could, but it's contrary to the entire biblical narrative, which points to the person of Christ as the locus of human salvation. Christianity's teachings are distinct from hinduism, syncretism notwithstanding.
Have you read the Bhagavad Gita, any of the Vedas, or other Upanishads?
No, I'd like to though, learning about hinduism has been at the bottom of my long todo list for a while now.
"If one were to imagine Christ as something larger than an individual man (Jesus) an energy or a consciousness"
This misrepresents this perspective as some new or unconventional alternative, where seeing Christ in this way is the standard Christian perspective ever since the first century CE.
"is it therefore possible one may come to the Father through another vector of that same Christ energy?"
We are discussing the Divinity here - there is only one Vector. How can the Divinity be both divided against himself and divine? On the other hand, you could consider each human experience as a vector, which may be what you mean. But still then, your question is asking something like "Is there some other option? I'm not sure I like the standard option". This is the wrong way of thinking about it. The question should be: "How can I align my experience, as a vector, with the Vector".
"It may not look *physically* as Jesus did, or rather how we imagine him to have looked."
Discussion of how the Vector physically appears is strange seeing as "there is none beside him". Figuratively speaking, you are talking about the appearance of pure blinding light that no one sees and lives to discuss. You do, however, also seem to be hinting that appearances are not so important, which is right on the money.
Please correct me if I misunderstand somewhere.
My closing points would be that if you truly seek to align yourself, then you will be pleasantly surprised how harmoniously the Vector manifests in your experience. However, you must not forget that the Vector manifested in the collective human experience as a man, and maintained perfect alignment surrounded by absolute misalignment, ultimately overcoming the greatest misalignment of all - death - by rising from the grave, thereby treading the impossible path that we can now follow.
We should not conflate paganism and shamanism. Also, the way the term paganism was used in Biblical times is different than how it is used today.
