What part will relays have in the upcoming years, different from now? Is it something only techies will provide? Is it something everyone will be able to provide? Is community based relay a thing? What are the biggest difficultiues with relays at the moment?

It will be something you can buy for little money and so can be provided easily for your family or friends.

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š seems solid

I'm no expert, but I think the community aspect will certainly have something to do with distribution. I think we're already seeing that to some degree. It'll be similar to how different websites hold different content. For instance, if you have children using nostr you would be able to use a relay that's dedicated to blocking adult content. Just my opinion.

Very exciting!

And I think anyone, if they take the time out of their day, will be able to set up their own relay with their own settings. Not sure what route paid relays will take, though. ๐Ÿค”

there will be a p2p 'relay' that loads with some apps

Thanks for your thoughts, philosophing is always possible :)

Makes sense to me!

Probably there will be ways to create (paid) relays with all the settings in the future as a non-techie!๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

i can see relays specializing in aggregating certain topics which is what most communities are about

News Sites or isolated apps could use a relay. Then a news site can post their news into nostr and also serve them as a classic website. Or like WhatsApp. A company could create a read-only relay so other clients can read (and maybe also write).

So many possibilities!

I think weโ€™ve barely started to scratch the surface of whatโ€™s possible with relays.

Imagine topic-focused or geofenced relays.

I would love to see smaller community run relays or even down to family level relays for group chat.

Relays are surprisingly easy to run, they just have to be online all the time.

To me, the big gap right now towards getting more interesting relays is that clients need to allow users to swap between relays and relay sets really easy. This would give you an easy way to switch job or view of the network in a tap or two.

Yup

Thanks! So.. i am doing everything right with my community relay ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’š

Yes, we need such a setting! Would change a lot as soon as youโ€™re able to decide on what relay you want to share a note, if you mean that !:)

What is the easiest way to run a relay in an old linux machine? Is perhaps something in appimage?

I am using Nostr-rs-relay! ๐ŸŒ

Yup. Thatโ€™s a good one. The easiest way would probably be to install umbrel or lnbits and use their one click relay installs.

This is the future.

I am setting up a family relay for some friends who have children < 12 years old. I want to offer them a healthy way to consume digital communication.

Any suggestions where to start if interested in running a relay?

How technical are you?

Reasonably comfortable with Linux and the CLI, so hopefully thatโ€™s enough?

Relay as a Service, RaaS

Is Blowater a chat client?

Yes and it will be more

Cool, looking forward! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’œ

Feedbacks welcome

Maybe running fedimints?
