I heard from a friend the other day who has dealt with a lot of financial stress over the years. This is someone who I had helped buy some bitcoin a while back, and now was in a need to sell most of it to avoid getting their phone and internet shut off, which would mean losing the ability to make an income.

The most frustrating part is knowing that this person only made a single small purchase at the start and never kept going. Instead of just paying some bills, it could have done so much more.

I debated even posting this, because this is someone I respect, with a ton of drive, who I’ve known for half my life, but who I’ve also seen struggle for a long time, and it’s disappointing to think of how differently things could have turned out.

Kept down by the looting government.

my construction foreman is like that. his son got him to buy some at 16k. he sold it at 20k, and now he tells me he shouldn't have done it. but he hasn't bought any more.

I shouldn’t be surprised. Most of the people I have ever tried to orange pill didn’t give it another look.

Depending on their cell carrier, they may be able to save some money by upgrading their phone plan to include mobile hotspot, and foregoing a seperate internet connection from Comcast, or Time-Warner, or whichever carrier serves his area. Those broadband internet services can be $100 or more, and that would be $100 less he has to come up with each month. He could also do a Verizon or T-Mobile standalone internet service if putting it all on his phone plan doesn't work. Those 5G home internet plans are $35-$50/mo for unlimited data, which is still a considerable savings compared with the cable companies.

That is not the problem. Saving $50-$100 a month isn’t going to turn anything around. I might as well just suggest they sell their car and cruise around town on roller skates.

I was only referring to your comment about them nit having enough money to pay their phone and internet bill. I wasn't intending it to be a solution to their underlying problems.

You can lead a horse to the water, but it has to drink on its own.

You can lead a horse to water, but if he won't ever drink, eventually you gotta put him down.

Yeah did not want to go that far, yet

Same. I helped him (master’s degree, tradfi background) purchase and gave detailed and emphatic instructions not to lose his seed. He did anyways and is now decidedly anti-bitcoin for… reasons.

you started the spinning of the spiral. 🌀 that is the hardest part. he’s on a better path than many.

It’s always hard to see someone go through tough times, especially when things could have turned out differently. But at least that small purchase gave them something to fall back on when they really needed it. Life doesn’t always go as planned, but sometimes even a small decision can make a difference
