Ok so I'm frustrated because I got this portable SSD thinking I could backup my computer and also run Linux from it. This is not true. So I've backed up my computer and have tremendous amounts of space for additional stuff.

In the meantime, I've gotten VirtualBox and have installed and am playing around with Linux Mint Cinnamon there.

I've also gotten SimpleX, Bitchat, MapleAI, Proton Drive.

What else should I be looking into if I'm going to be trying to lead people into tech sovereignty?

Mint is my favorite! Cant wait until 23.0 when Wayland is more usable.

Highly recommend Qemu over virtual box! Not made by a CIA cutout lol (Oracle)

Vb is open source, but the plugin to integrate with guest os is closed source so who knows there.

Also just functionally better for a bunch of different reasons.

Also you COULD run linux off of the external drive, but it would require some careful partitioning. But totally doable.

I just found out about immich.app , its like a self hosted google photos

Hmm I will investigate Qemu. I didn't even think about avoiding Oracle which is dumb because I know they have CIA ties 😅 I'm just in over my head 😮‍💨

I am using the virtualbox to try out Linux, but I think too much partitioning will get out of my skill set very quickly. I think I'll just eventually fully convert the computer to Linux and have this big SSD for file backups and maybe I'll start a library of stuff 🏴‍☠️

If you're not doing anything sensitive I wouldn't worry about it. Also you're running from windows as a host right? It's already backdoored so using QEMU over VirtualBox doesn't really decrease your attack surface you're just adding more friction to an already daunting task. I'd stick with what you have for now and get comfy there.

But it's good to know and once I get fully transferred to Linux I'll make sure to use QEMU if I start a similar process because then it'll really be CIA-free 😎

When your Linux skills improve you can use wiki.debian.org/KVM to install KVM/QEMU VMs. They'll perform way better than virtual box while being more secure and once set up be pretty easy to use with a GUI like AQEMU or virt-manager (guide explains both).
