Ok so I'm frustrated because I got this portable SSD thinking I could backup my computer and also run Linux from it. This is not true. So I've backed up my computer and have tremendous amounts of space for additional stuff.

In the meantime, I've gotten VirtualBox and have installed and am playing around with Linux Mint Cinnamon there.

I've also gotten SimpleX, Bitchat, MapleAI, Proton Drive.

What else should I be looking into if I'm going to be trying to lead people into tech sovereignty?

I don't see a reason why you couldn't. You could just make two partitions of the external drive: one for your Linux install, the other for a backup. Then in your BIOS you could boot from the Linux install. A bit technical but if you talk to MapleAI or nano-gpt about it they could probably give you a step by step.

Those are some of the best applications for privacy tech. Beyond that the best password manager is KeePass. Best browser against fingerprinting is Mullvad Browser (Tor browser without Tor). Its the only desktop browser that consistently fools fingerprint.com for me. Don't sleep on Tor Browser for daily use too, it has great privacy protections vs even Mullvad + VPN.

Speaking of VPNs, Mullvad or NYM are the best right now no question. Both go beyond simple IP obfuscation and mask packet fingerprinting which is a huge privacy boost.

Another thing to look into is an OpenWRT router, like the OpenWRT One. You just use it instead of your ISPs router and because the firmware is FOSS you have no spyware, higher performance, and can add a router level VPN, custom DNS, and more privacy features. I'd say don't worry about that yet your OS choice is most important I'd focus on Linux and GrapheneOS for a while until you're feeling the itch to go further again. Important not to get overwhelmed, never let perfect be the enemy of good.

Can't think of much else you're going really deep into it which is incredible I'm quite impressed.

Ok taking this one at a time:

1) I think the "a bit technical" partitions while booting is assuming a lot more technical prowess than I currently have. I am working with Maple AI but ran out of credits almost immediately; working with ChatGPT as I still have that subscription until the end of the month and it is absolutely maddening because it'll say something is possible then as I go to check via YouTube tutorial it says it will overwrite everything. I'm already nervous enough about that so I am being cautious and waiting till I can find a spare USB.

2) What is fingerprinting?

3) Thank you for mentioning OpenWRT router, that seems really cool. Ever since I've heard the wifi routers can basically map everything in your house it's felt like a freaky hostage relationship 😱

4) Thank you, it's very hard to do and uncomfortable and overwhelming but at a certain point I just need to jump in with both feet and learn how to swim 👙

1) I'd say don't worry about the partitions then, either keep practicing in the VM or get a flash drive and install Linux Mint on there that way you can boot from it on your computer and play around with it on your PC without worrying about partioning drives. Partitions can be tricky and can result in data loss so your hesitation is warranted.

There's also something to say about just diving in head first and making it work. When I was a kid I had Ubuntu as a dual boot and played with it a bit but it wasn't until I became an adult and went down the privacy rabbit whole that I did a complete switch and had to figure out quickly how to remake my workflows. Had I gone all in at an earlier age who knows where I'd be today.

2) Your IP isn't the only info webpages get when you visit them. Perhaps check out this article for details https://mullvad.net/en/browser/browser-fingerprinting if you go to fingerprint.com then note the visitor ID then change your VPN server, you'll not that on most browsers the website will recognize you as the same user. Fingerprint resistant browsers like Tor Browser or Mullvad make you look like other users of the same browser so the website gets lots of false positives increasing your anonymity.

It's good to note that this is mainly a desktop issue, mobile browsers have much more uniform fingerprints since each device has the same specs largely.

3) Yeah WiFi motion tracking is real and very accurate. Also with the PATRIOT act the federal government basically accesses everything your ISP knows without a warrant so it's extra dangerous.

1) yes the plan is to dive into Linux fully, I just need to make sure my files work. I'm doing this as part of my efforts to lead a sovereignty salon, but if I show up can cannot present because I broke my computer doing this then it's not going to engender trust 😅

I remember back in the 00s there was a boy in my highschool who would never shut up about Linux. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and tell him, "Nathan, you were right and I was wrong. I'm sorry for teasing you so much. I had a crush on you and didn't like not understanding what you were talking about." 🥹🫂

2) this is very interesting and something I hadn't known about before thank you for sharing!

3) my biggest concern with the wifi is how much it overlaps spaces. So I keep thinking in my next place I won't use wifi, it's creepy and I don't need it as mostly I read actual books. But even in a separate house I can still see my neighbors wifi suggestions on my phone. Obviously in an apartment it's worse because there closer together. I feel like at some point all of this leads to a shack in the woods in the middle of West Virginia 😮‍💨

Kiwix is kind of fun.

You can use it host your own offline copy of wikipedia and other reference libraries and share it on your network.

yep! I run kiwix on my home server. has full wikipedia with pictures, bitcoinpedia., some sports wikis, and stack overflow. The wikipedia offline is insanely fast, instant vs wikipedia over the internet too.

This is very interesting to me! I am going to try to run community servers for my small town, would Kiwix be able to give access to a larger group too?

I guess it depends on the size. Why not just use wikipedia for that? Having local only rally makes sense for one intranet, backups of info, and internet outages.

This is a very cool idea!!! A lot of my Sovereignty Salon is in the permaculture guild and one of the reasons they're so stuck on Facebook is because it's what they always used to share these types of things. I wonder if I could get a digital town reference library going 🤔

Linux Mint is a great way to start.

Syncthing is a syncing tool that will run on your computer and your phone. It's decentralized and a great way to sync folders between devices. You can even share folder with a friend if they also use syncthing. Proton Drive is a good intermediate step, but syncthing will allow you to be more in control of your data.

KeepassXC is a password manager that will also work on your computer and phone. If you pair it with syncthing, then you can synchronize keepassXC between devices, so no need for a cloud service.

Tor Browser is useful to keep around for more private web browsing.

Thank you! Syncthing sounds interesting but as I'm not converting my phone yet and also I have no friends to share files with that will be a step I investigate down the road.

Is KeepassXC compatible with Nostr? The nsec is what I have the most trouble with in terms of passwords.

Does Tor Browser have a VPN as well included? Or is that something added? I've heard of Tor but broadly haven't seen a need for it because I don't really do much online, but maybe that's an obvious next step for improvement.

Tor browser routes all traffic through Tor which is like a super VPN (more server hops and no payment details linked). Downside is that it's slower than VPNs.

KeepassXC just stores whatever you want in text. For my Nostr npub and nsec I created an entry in KeePass called "Nostr Daedalus" then put my npub in the username field and nsec in the password.

I've had good luck with getting friends and family to use my self-hosted Snikket chat. It's XMPP with OMEMO.

We'll see! My community is pretty limited so for right now I'm just worrying about getting myself set up better 🥰

Have you looked into getting a Start9 server? What web browser do you use?

As for your question, I made the switch over to FOSS and tech sovereignty last year! In addition to what you've got going on, consider Standard Notes for your notes. Obviously, Graphene OS if you have a Pixel phone. Binary Eye for a QR scanner that allows you to see what the code contains before opening it.

I'm currently working on switching from Google Photos to Immich. I need to start using OsmAnd~ instead of Google Maps, but Gmaps is just too powerful 🫠

If you have an Android then you can essentially replace every Google/Samsung/proprietary essential app with a FOSS alternative.

1) I don't know what a start9 server is. I mostly have used Google Chrome as a browser but with the Linux Mint it is Firefox which I've used before too

2) binary eye seems very cool, thank you for the recommendation!

3) I have an android but Verizon has it locked so I need to get a different phone before I can get FOSS alternatives there. That's fine for me because there's a lot to do with the computer and I'm already super overwhelmed 😅

https://start9.com/ check it out! it's pretty sweet. I'm waiting for the new OS which I hear will support Docker, which will open using Start9 for so many more applications!

ah ok, well, feel free to let me know/make a new note when you switch and I can recommend more FOSS 🫡

Thank you so much 🥰

Anytime! 🫂

Nice how you liking mint?

You know how sometimes you give up coffee or cigarettes or whatever because you know it's bad for you.

But the next morning you wake up and your head is pounding and your hands are a bit shaky and you're in the most violently terrible attitude... And even though there's a rational side of you that says "but this is helping you not get cancer!"

There's a petulant side of you that suggests surely cancer isn't all that bad 😞

I find all of this very overwhelming and uncomfortable but I have faith if I stick with it I'll get more used to it. It's honestly not so bad I've just used windows literally all my life so it's different and that's not great.

Yeah :) I understand

The nice thing about if you used the VirtualBox to download Linux is that it’s like test driving the machine rather than committing to buying it

I’ve never used Mint but I hear it’s very beginner friendly but also very similar to windows in feel

A lot of people hate on Ubuntu but I think you might find it as easy as Windows and its not as much of a windows replica as mint is from what I hear

So it feels like you actually get something from making the switch

It’s only very slightly more “manual” than mint but if you have another machine using AI you can have it walk you through the installation to fit your needs

And since you used a VM you can just wipe the Virtual Machine (wiping the mint) and install Ubuntu LTS without having wasted any of your compute resources :) if you decided that’s what you want

Eventually when you comfortable using a command line Linux is REALLY REALLY cool 😎 and using a terminal is really not as hard as the hacker types always want to make it sound to feel cool

But it’s super fun because it gives you really low level control over your device and once you experience that type of control over your machine it’s like opening a Pandora’s box

I would recommend staying in the virtual box until you feel really confident though because you can accidentally wipe important files on your actual HD

Your SSD sounds like it has enough space and can however be used to completely back up your machine if you wanted to work from there when you get more comfortable and that would eliminate risk too

I know all these things sound overwhelming to take in but if you just take in one concept a day and really digest it I think you’ll have the hang of it in no time and it’s really worth it

Also it’s normal to want throw your computer out a window with Linux some days

It seems like a lot of tech ability is just the ability to resist throwing the computer out the window 🤣

I think doing a full system backup on the SSD might be a viable path. Really I'm just trying to make sure I can use my current files. Right now I have the virtual machine running but cannot actually use any of my current work. Hopefully that's something I can get sorted today with some effort.

I have my next Sovereignty Salon tomorrow, so I had the idea to at least get myself started on some of these tech switches so I'm walking the walk not just talking the talk. Of course if I show up and cannot actually present from my prepared slides then I'll be not helping people feel comfortable making the switch themselves 🤣

It's just a matter of persistent effort. I just never really bothered before. Luckily (?) all of the legacy tech firms have gotten so egregious that even middle aged normies like myself can be motivated to make these switches.

Whenever the computer says to me “I’m sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” - I feel like it’s basically throwing me out the window. Over and over again.

It's a mutually defenestrating relationship 🤣🫂😮‍💨

I feel like I have the upper hand, it’s how I am able to keep my cool. But when that thing grows arms and legs, I may not be able to.

They're coming for you 😱

That's what freedom is 🥹

Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom

One thing I would recommend since I think you’re going for is privacy is hardening your VirtualBox at least at the host level

This is super easy

Your VirtualBox manager should have a little yellow gear for settings,

Click that

When the settings wizard opens,

Go to General > Expert

You’ll see some tabs like “identity, features, Description, and Disk Encryption”

Check the box “encrypt disks”

Then in the drop down you can choose either 126 bit or 256 bit AES

This will have you set the password and that way EVEN IF someone got access to your physical machine and had a password to get in, they would need the password to open up your Live Linux environment

You can also harden at the guest level but that’s a little more nuanced but good to do if you plan on file sharing

Mint is my favorite! Cant wait until 23.0 when Wayland is more usable.

Also I

Highly recommend Qemu over virtual box! Not made by a CIA cutout lol (Oracle)

Vb is open source, but the plugin to integrate with guest os is closed source so who knows there.

Also just functionally better for a bunch of different reasons.

Also you COULD run linux off of the external drive, but it would require some careful partitioning. But totally doable.

I just found out about immich.app , its like a self hosted google photos

Hmm I will investigate Qemu. I didn't even think about avoiding Oracle which is dumb because I know they have CIA ties 😅 I'm just in over my head 😮‍💨

I am using the virtualbox to try out Linux, but I think too much partitioning will get out of my skill set very quickly. I think I'll just eventually fully convert the computer to Linux and have this big SSD for file backups and maybe I'll start a library of stuff 🏴‍☠️

If you're not doing anything sensitive I wouldn't worry about it. Also you're running from windows as a host right? It's already backdoored so using QEMU over VirtualBox doesn't really decrease your attack surface you're just adding more friction to an already daunting task. I'd stick with what you have for now and get comfy there.

Ok thank you, I think I will 🤣

But it's good to know and once I get fully transferred to Linux I'll make sure to use QEMU if I start a similar process because then it'll really be CIA-free 😎

When your Linux skills improve you can use wiki.debian.org/KVM to install KVM/QEMU VMs. They'll perform way better than virtual box while being more secure and once set up be pretty easy to use with a GUI like AQEMU or virt-manager (guide explains both).

Immich is a great self-hosted photos app and I use Nextcloud for file hosting

heads-up: we looked for a lightning address on your profile but could not find one... u can get a free one at https://rizful.com ... and then reply back to this comment so we can zap you.

Oh, very interesting! I will check out immich for sure, thank you for the rec!

Why can't you run Linux from it? Bios limitation? Firmware issue?

For tech sovereignty, you can go everywhere. I'm loving Copyparty since I found it as a very versatile and trivial to deploy file server. Even from a phone. https://github.com/9001/copyparty

Can't go wrong with a Nostr relay to hold an archive of all ofyour notes. Or heck, a blossom server.

I assume you've already got a full Bitcoin node. If no Lightning yet, LND is not as hard as some have made it out to be to run. You can make it that way, but a basic server with a private channel or two will teach you a lot and be quire manageable. Also can't go wrong with things like Joinmarket to handle the best coinjoin implementation out there from a sovereignty perspective. Be sure to get JAM for the graphical front end.

Oh goes without saying, but sshd for remote access from your phone or other devices. And tunneling from public wifi.

Why would I need remote access to my phone?

I meant the other way: use your phone to access your music, book, movie, and other file library.

But i have actually downloaded stuff while out visiting family and needed to get it to them because I wasn't trying to have them access the pirate sites I got it from 😄

I usually have just used sftp with andftp to access my books. Used to use mpd to access and stream my music.

Copyparty just does it all with a simple file.

I think I could run it from my SSD, but then it wouldn't be easy to use that as my file backup. If by bios limitations you mean I am not good with tech then, yes, that is the issue 🤣

That copy party thing, when do you use it? You say as a file server does it act as a library?

I think a Nostr relay or blossom server are well out of my current skillset, but I am hoping to get a community server running to help myself and others learn how to do this.

You assume incorrectly about me running a Bitcoin node. I get the impression you're assuming a lot more technical savvy than I currently have 🤣

What is "coin join implementation" and "graphical front end"?

You can use copyparty whenever. Run it all the time to share your home media library with your phone, or smart TV. Spin it up on the fly if you have a large file to send to someone that's too big for email.

It takes no configuration and literally is just a single file with no installation. It's feature set with so much simplicity is a baffling design.

Coinjoin implementation would be something like Joinmarket, Samourai, Ashigaru, or Wasabi. Used for de-linking your utxo's with your real life identity.

Joinmarket is a text based tool, and uses JAM as a graphical interface which makes it much easier to use.

I also think you may be suffering from the assumption that things are complicated because they sound complicated. Running a node can be as simple as download Bitcoin Knots or Core and run it. And Nostr relay..well, there's Citrine for Android.

Nodes get complicated when you mix a bunch of different services and set up automatic restarting and monitoring, honestly more thanks to the mess that is systemd than anything. But it's all extra. If you run Bitcoind you run a node.

Session

You could move the virtualbox image to the external drive.

I will investigate 🤔
