Linux Mint is a great way to start.

Syncthing is a syncing tool that will run on your computer and your phone. It's decentralized and a great way to sync folders between devices. You can even share folder with a friend if they also use syncthing. Proton Drive is a good intermediate step, but syncthing will allow you to be more in control of your data.

KeepassXC is a password manager that will also work on your computer and phone. If you pair it with syncthing, then you can synchronize keepassXC between devices, so no need for a cloud service.

Tor Browser is useful to keep around for more private web browsing.

Thank you! Syncthing sounds interesting but as I'm not converting my phone yet and also I have no friends to share files with that will be a step I investigate down the road.

Is KeepassXC compatible with Nostr? The nsec is what I have the most trouble with in terms of passwords.

Does Tor Browser have a VPN as well included? Or is that something added? I've heard of Tor but broadly haven't seen a need for it because I don't really do much online, but maybe that's an obvious next step for improvement.

Tor browser routes all traffic through Tor which is like a super VPN (more server hops and no payment details linked). Downside is that it's slower than VPNs.

KeepassXC just stores whatever you want in text. For my Nostr npub and nsec I created an entry in KeePass called "Nostr Daedalus" then put my npub in the username field and nsec in the password.
