The EU has to stay out of it, which company favors which plug. A the developer has thought of something. B The market rules!

The plug shape is maybe universal but you have dozens if not hubdred of protocols to charge and transfer data/video using USB-C. PD (5V, 9V, 12V, 20V), PD adaptative, QC (1,2.0, 3.0,...), Thunderbolt 2, 3, 4, USB2, 3, 3.1, Gen2x... and much much more.
With USB-C you know you can always plug it but you never know what will work or not.
