I have an old (year 2005) Toshiba satellite hanging around which I have been trying to setup for the cryptowolf.ca Bitcoin school in the cryptocave classroom.

I really don't want to dispose of it because its sentimental.

I think the thermal paste on the CPU/heatsink has deteriorated so it overheats during any prolonged process or installation.

I put it in the cold cellar (its currently 5 degrees Celcius there, -15 outside) just to get me through the installation of Arch/EndeavourOS/LinuxMint - (havent decided yet because im wondering if any of the proprietary drivers in the bloated distros might actually help the fan/CPU work more efficiently.)

Once the installation of the OS is complete, my theory is I will be able to run it normally inside the house as long as all installations are completed in the cold cellar first. It did not seem to have any issues with running system updates or installing most applications in normal room temperature, however once i tried to install VLC (over command line on arch) it took WAAAAY TOO LONG and overheated and shut off.

Will report back with the results of the cold cellar experiment and room temperature post installation running experiment shortly.

Goal is to have it running 24/7 with a Bitcoin wallet on-screen for the first graders to tinker with.

There's a dozen more here much newer and in great working condition with various OSs on them, however I would like to salvage this one if possible and make use of it for as long as possible.

ESPECIALLY BECAUSE ITS PRE- PSP era laptop!

(Platform Security Processor - equiv to Intel Management Engine)

Fingers crossed!

Good luck 🤞🍀! You can do it 🤙!

Did you try live cd

They will load the large kernel and all the drives whatever distro you’re using.

Also don’t install bloat desktop environments

Live USB - I dont think I have any blank CD's laying around from 1994...

Wouldn't the spinning of a CD rom also further overheat the machine?

I meant usb thumb drive. But maybe in 05 it won’t boot from a usb?

I’d already by opening up the back case and getting in there to see if can fix it.

There’s probably YT videos on how to do for that model

as mentioned in the original note, Im quite sure its the thermal paste that needs to be replaced. Its not the cost or the know how thats delaying that repair, its the TIME 😉

Currently I have about 6 machines opened up in the process of repair, day job, volunteering, providing bitcoin and linux education classes and doing my laundry lol.

I just want to make it functional before I have the time to replace the thermal paste. Atleast while its installing Arch in the cantina cold cellar, I can multitask and do other things simultaneously 😃

did know you think it’s the T paste.

But don’t that you had this much going .

Well get to work homie

or don’t.

I’m a slacker, not got too much going on but too much planned going on in my head

oh it has booted live USB thousands of times over the past 25 years 😄

yes thats the only way I install GNU/Linux distributions .

For some time now I only buy old but in clean condition old thinkpads for laptops

Most of my machines are Thinkpads. I have one running 24/7 non stop since 2015. Have a couple of brand new ThinkPad T16s, damn amazing.

I will never BUY anything other than a ThinkPad when it comes to laptops.

The one that is running continuously since 2015 I paid 150$ canadian for back in 2015. Used.

Is it a 32-bit machine?

Last time I tries to load Linux on a 32-bot Sattelite, my best lick was with PuppyLimux

if it was a 32 bit machine I would probably try a distro like puppy linux on this.

So far so good with archlinux, everything is isntalled, but i still have it in the cold room to install a few applications and then I will bring it in for 24 hour idle test in room temperature.

Wait, I thought...you just said...it was a 32-bit machine? Does arch have 32-bit builds or am I misreading?

Oh Iseez, the Turion IS a 64-bit machine
