Hey, guys, got a noob question I never thought of before: What’s the difference between the Display name and Username? What is username’s use case?

From what I see, username, display name and the prefix of your address can be all different and all of them can be used to tag or search for users. Feels like we’ve got an unnecessary “Name” field. What am I missing?

I'm with you on this. If we had legacy website accounts then user name and display name may make sense since you'd use one to login and the latter to be displayed on your profile? However on nostr we have NIP05 which is your identifier and we have display name. The common "name" filed seems unnecessary.

If I don’t find out the reason for this l’ma start the #killtheusername campaign 😄

AFAIW username is used for nip05 and probably has more characters limitations than displayName....

That’s what I thought, but your Nostr address prefix can be different from your username.

username must be unique.

for display name everyone can be Tony.

Nostr address has to be unique, but I’m sure you can change your username to Tony right now and nothing will stop you.

Nip05 it's unique, name its like an username but can be anything you want and people can tag you, it's better to choose one and just keep it bc ppl will probably remember by username. display name its like what you want to be displayed instead of your username like a phrase or something you would like and change when you want. This is my understanding.

I feel the same way. I just don’t see the point in all three 😅

Not everyone uses nip05, if it's not your domain you must pay and they can always go offline, the name/username makes sense so that people can find you without nip05, the display name yeah a bit useless.

That brought some sense to it, thanks

I have seen name, displayName, display_name, username. It’s a bit of a mess and it should only be name as specified in nip-01 imo.

The only username in nostr is the npub and the nip05 nostr address makes the npub human readable or easy to find.

From Nostur I have already removed all the names except these above.
