My friend is now actively seeking a new lawyer to defend his interests. The one he has now is dismissive of his convictions and trying to drop him.

It sounds like your friend is applying law in a legal setting that is acting umlawfully. Most attornies know the legal system, and almost nothing about law.

Finding someone knowlegable in law to represent your friend is going to be a challenge.

However, if he's hired a lawyer, that lawyer is obligated to act as your friend's agent. This means the lawyer must act in the same way your friend would. Not doing so is illegal, and actionable. If the lawyer refuses to act in your friend's stead, your friend can claim misrepresentation, dereliction of duties, or other similar objections.

If successful, this would give him time to find someone that understands law, and how it usually superscedes anything that is "legal".

Caveat: at a certain point, a lawyer sometimes has to tell you something is impossible, or give you news you don’t want to hear about your options.

We’re not totally convinced this has really gotten there yet. The lawyer SEEMS to just be tired of dealing with this situation.

Lawyers often think the possible isn't possible.

In modern day, lawyers are taught to think within the legal bubble, and to ignore law, in the same way that doctors are trained to think within the pharaceutical bubble, and ignore health.
