The UK election system is bonkers. Labour has a landslide victory even though they’re getting less votes in 2024’s major victory as they got in 2019 in their worst defeat. How do you justify such a broken system as a functional democracy?

First past the post single member constituencies is a terrible electoral system. There are so many better forms of voting.

And yet none of them stop the money printer.

it's possible that Labour will introduce proportional representation, not sure how that would affect their seat number if it were being used in this election. I believe it would mean tories have even fewer seats, and smaller parties more.

the main thing this election is the tories have #zeroseats or as close to zero seats as possible lol

There's been a lot of Left campaigning against Labour, especially around Palestine/Israel. These votes predominantly going to independents and Green. Simultaneously, there's the right (and left) campaigning against Conservatives, with bites being lost mostly to Reform and abstaining. It's been a weird one.

Both left and right don't feel their supposed parties represent them. Seeing the two parties as a choice between Balirite Blue or Blairire Red.

But yeah you're right, this Labour win would be less than what labour under Corbyn got when he lost. But there was more of a united front against Labour then.

I recall hearing somewhere that approval voting is best.

We saw similar but through smaller and newer parties splitting the existing votes. Then the largest party in one Province lost because the other parties firmed a coalition. But at the end of the day, the most voters are still represented so I suppose it works out...

Is that not just because less people are voting in total?

randomly selecting citizens would be much better

maybe people with more land should get more votes

It's a system which has lasted a long time.

On what basis are you saying it is terrible, everyone in the uk understands the system.

There is no perfect system, what suits one country might not suit another.

Except that NZ which is very much modeled on the UK switched to MMP and it works much better.

Thank you, I will read and consider. However I still believe it's very difficult to compare two different systems over the long term. Also the conditions prior to NZ's change will not necessarily be the same in the UK.

Yeah it's a complete scam as far as I'm concerned. It's not a landslide it's a marginal seat win. Take a look at this thread.

But then people will stay uninformed, even when someone tries to tell them (cognitive dissonance) and keep hoping things will get better if the right coloured team are in charge, which has never happened ever in history.

Best thing is don't vote for continued slavery and work on exiting the system. Or at least switch off "the news" and have a nice day instead.

They shifted the constiuency boundaries around the last election as well.
