On š• posting sensational and clickbait-y posts can get you a lot of engagement and potentially compensated monetarily from the platform if your account is eligible for that.

On #nostr there is no platform to reward you for generating ā€œengagementā€ for it. There are only other people, who are enabled by the protocol to send you a tip if and only if they feel like it, and probably only if you deliver value into their content feed. And there are no eligibility requirements for you to participate. I believe the #V4V nature of Nostr is a natural check against the over-sensationalism and engagement farming found on other social platforms like š•.

With that being said, there will be those who seek out sensationalism and will reward those who provide it (through zaps). I don’t think nostr will stop that, but it will be easier for one to avoid it in nostr if that’s not what their into.

They’re

Yea some people like that, it’s true. I just don’t think the [current] design of Nostr is conducive to it spreading like it does on š•.

The big difference being that here it’s people rewarding people for providing them value directly. On š• it’s the platform rewarding certain people for providing engagement that benefits the platform.

Yes, but it will not stop the propagation of sensationalism just because people are being reward from millions of individuals vs a platform.

I’m skeptical that it will propagate in the same manner, or to the same degree. Maybe I’m wrong. It will be interesting to observe how those dynamics evolve here in the absence of central control.

I notice this. Such an eye-opener to see how people that Ex deemed important come to grips with Nostr. POW

šŸ’Æ Some keep returning to X because they don’t seem to find a rhythm here. Maybe they can’t because they’re too dependent on the platform.

Exactly šŸ’ÆšŸ’Æ and that platform doesn't support free speech.

Yes it’s a huge benefit of this network if it remains that way. It’s potentially transformative to society. I’m not sure many realize this yet.

How does it stop people from desiring sensationalism? There will always be those that seek it out and those that will provide it. Yes, it’s easier to avoid it on Nostr because we aren’t being force fed it, but it will not stop humans from being human.

It doesn’t stop people from seeking it out but it also doesn’t enable them. On other social media views inform algorithms which then enable more reach for sensational content. We don’t have that on nostr. A note is not going to ā€œgo viralā€ just because it enrages people. Someone will have to sit there and like and reshare it.

Which they will?

I rarely use twitter nowadays but if I do have a peek, the instant barrage of hate sees I don’t stay long. It really is a cesspool.

Nostr is chilled af šŸ˜Ž

Nobody cares

Conversation has long been dead over there. It’s been drowned out and smothered by the algo boosting of sensational hot takes and shit posting.
