Yep. There are drawbacks. That's why people need to work on it and choose good ones.
My point is our people have not created good enough relays for blocking spam yet. The best success I've had is blocking anyone without a NIP-05, and that's just a different major drawback.
My bot is accessing 3000 relays. Almost all of them are spam free right now. That can change, but there are definitely a LOT of options out there.

Posts from users in admin’s WoT
Or posts from valid NIP-05
Or posts with PoW > x
This would be less restrictive than a pure WoT relay, but still allow new users outside the admin’s WoT.

Agree. That's why I use relay.tools which supports NIP-42. Nothing wrong with whitelists in my eyes when it works all the same. Let me control the userbase on my own relays. If I can't do it manually then I'll employ something more. For now I have no problem doing this manually, while everyone else suffers at the expensive of a freemium product.
There are multiple solutions but everything requires due diligence.

That's not a good solution. The relay software is not yet at standards where you can easily delete spam quickly. The users coming into Nostr shouldn't have to spend time picking which relay is filtering spam or not.
The solution here is requiring "follow requests" that cost 1 Satoshi or less. That will make it too expensive for bots to operate.
I also don't want anyone interacting with my profile unless I accept their follow request because I've noticed bots liking my notes in order to get noticed.
When billions are using Nostr it's going to be garbage just like X where you keep receiving lies and follows from those fake profiles with fake asian women profile pictures.

From a user perspective I have no issues with reply guy .. the poor bot is simply creating dumb replies .. any relay who care to save on their storage shall figure out what they need to do ..
If #nostr censored bots , than it shall soon censor humans too ..
In general, I like it, but many newbies aren't set up with sats and a lightning wallet yet. That makes them unable to pay to follow and makes them leave. Until it is a little easier to setup a wallet and zap really easily, that would just drive people away.
The other problem is what happens when bitcoin sky rockets and a sat is real money? We don't want to force something that causes problems later. I suppose if it was optional, it might be OK.
That being said, I'd definitely be willing to pay a sat to follow someone.
Do you know if there exists a docker image, cloud formation template or similar that I can use to deploy a relay to linode? I'd happily run a free public relay that employs good filtering if someone has done the initial legwork... even if costs me some fiat.
The real PoW is making your entire own implementation because you want more configurability of your relays.
