Anyone interested in learning more about #blockstream satellite?

The free service allows you to download all bitcoin data without internet & without your isp knowing you run a bitcoin node. You are on your own for transmitting your 250 byte transaction though. Consider postcards or using an SMS bitcoin relay service.

Minor trust issue with getting all your bitcoin data from a single source, so a sanity check is required before considering a payment to you as finalized (besides waiting 6 or so confirmations).

Can be done cheaply with a small usb device called a software defined radio and a satellite dish you might already have or can find dirt cheap.

how many man hours would you estimate i will invest to get it up and running? is it possible to use as a backup or will it become my main connection for blockchain data?

20 hours if you have never pointed a dish before. 2 if you have.

If you don’t have a dish, mounting on a wall, ground pole, or ground mount is preferable to risking your life on a roof and easier for adjusting. Running cables into your home through the attic or basement is actually really easy.

A bigger dish is easier to point. It helps a lot to see where in the sky your targeted satellite lives. Dishpointer on iOS is what I used. Having realtime feedback from your pc while you adjust dish pointing helps a ton (there’s a tool in Blockstream satellite software for this).

thank you for the insight here šŸ¤™

also do you use a wallet like samurai and its mesh network intergration with gotenna?

I’ve sent a transaction over it for testing. I have a gotenna mounted on my roof with some modifications to give it 20 mi+ range. But gotenna blows. Proprietary platform.

ive only considered gotenna because of the samurai wallet intergration. what are the other options?

That’s the only one I’ve used. On Android.

Gotenna is dead though. There was a guy named Richard Meyers who had some kick ass ideas for a mesh network incentivized by bitcoin payments…not sure what happened to him…

i dont know what you mean by dead. cant use it to broadcast transactions?

Do you need to buy a gotenna? They’re not for sale anymore.

Working on it!

And you should look into amateur radio for broadcasting other data.

I really should. Im taking a little more time off this year, so I should get my hands on license. Maybe I can reach @NVK in Toronto from here in Arizona.

Also, that dish will work for eutelsat-113 in a large part of the US but might be a stretch for reaching Galaxy-18 satellite.

I have a link somewhere to estimate requires dish diameter.

If you get licensed, I’m in northern Shenandoah valley.

Iirc, it’s a minimum of 45cm for Galaxy18. Finally got the LNB amp in the mail yesterday so should know for certain soon.

Yeah, but where I live 45 cm is marginal. But being an over achiever, I went with a 1.2 m dish (there is essentially no advantage over a 60 cm dish given how the data is redundantly transmitted…it’s fairly tolerant of outages).

The dish was free. šŸ™ƒ might upgrade later.

I started with the same dish. Worked hard to get it pointed at G18, which wasn’t my best choice, but at the time I didn’t know how to look up expected power at my location.

Wait. So this dish will or will not work? Haven’t gotten to testing stage yet.

Would love to do this onboard! šŸ¤™

Geostationary orbit of the satellites would require a fairly fancy dish mount to keep lock on same point in sky. That’s out of my league but not unusual for boat satellite folks.

Can get started with a cheap software defined radio…https://a.co/d/6xQ2lFp (I’ve bought three of these on amazon over the years…prices were $24 in 2018, $26 in 2019, $30 in 2020, and $34 today).

All you need after that is a dish, an LNB, power supply, and some cabling.
