The scariest dystopia I can imagine is one that seems inevitable: Neuralink-like device connected to AIs so that your thoughts become prompts, and the subsequent thoughts, ideas and mental images are indistinguisable from AI responses.

It's bad enough knowing that all "your" thoughts are downstream of everything you've ever perceived or interacted with - including the hypnotic sludge from overtly manipulative algorithms. The only thing worse is being unable to discern which thoughts are "yours" and which are API responses from MegaCorp's AI servers.

The 100 (a CW series) gets into this with The Greater Truth if you’re willing to put up with a teen drama.

I'm still thinking of how brain implants are gonna be marketed to the general public. Maybe for parents to implant them in their kids as a way to make them more competitive academically. Nightmare stuff.

I've spent enough time in Cyberpunk 2077 taking over people's inplants and harming them without ever touching or shooting them so I would never want to get one of those myself.
