Local only. Have zfs nixos box setup rn. Actually very nice to have a "real" linux machine instead of a shrinkwrapped semi-proprietary vendor solution.
Truenas with lots of ECC RAM, internet connected
DIY, LAN only. Once in a while I have a need for remote access, but as a policy I keep storage LAN-only and synch when I'm local.
Synology, LAN with tailscale
Hmm I’ve had synology once and looked at network traffic to see nonstop attacks from China and Russia
Our IT guy at work likes synology. He gave me one of his older systems and it works well. Also using in conjunction with Tailscale
Old PC + Fedora (migrated from openSUSE, briefly to TrueNAS, and then to Fedora). Btrfs in RAID 1 + WireGuard access + a few containers and VMs.
A bunch of WD Reds (some over 10 years old) and a couple of SSDs. Dual-port 10 GB NIC as my NAS is also acting as a router and one of my two "servers" (the other being an old Intel iMac).
External backups to Backblaze.
I likely forgot a gazillion things, but this is the gist of it.
Synologie is way to much expensive, DIY solutions are way better.
And connect it securely to the internet.
QNAP
We haven't set it up for the Internet, yet.
