I'm not sure if it's my inability to accept direct praise, but it really grinds my gears when someone appreciates behavior that, from my perspective, couldn't be any different. For example, you come out of a serious medical operation and someone calls you brave, or you get called strong for pushing through a situation you had zero power to influence. What are the other options? Skip the operation and die? Sit in the middle of the room crying about the situation? It wouldn't change the outcome anyway. #nostrant
