Wondering about hardware wallets:

The Passport is the most expensive, but what are its actual benefits vs coldcard? The UI seems comparable, and I don't see many differences...

The Jade looks the most beginner-friendly, but I could be wrong. It's also literally half the price of coldcard...

Any advice or input welcome, the Google research has been a little overwhelming...

Get a jade. Simple made by a true bitcoin OG and its open source. Very easy to setup and easy on the pocket unlike the others. Jade can be used as singing device like for 2fa authentication.

Blockstream jade is the best

Thank you! I'm glad to hear it, as it is the most inexpensive option πŸ˜… And I'm glad it's beginner friendly too... How do you interact with it, since it doesn't have a keypad? Please tell me if I'm asking too many questions, I'm just so overwhelmed 😭

There is a rocker switch and a single button. The majority of key entry will be done by optimized menus and using the back/forth of the rocker and the button to confirm choice.

As you can see, everyone has many opinions. But I don't think you can go wrong with any of the devices discussed here. That is because:

They can all be operated offline and airgapped.

ColdCard or Passport have no wireless communication radios, and do not need to talk directly to a computer while it runs sensitive operations. The Jade can do that in a special "signing device" mode, where it does not use Bluetooth or a wire, but requires you to enter your seed phrase in every time you want to sign a transaction.

On the screen a keyboard will pop up when needed. 2 buttons one you use to scroll like up down. The other one confirms anything you need to confirm.

Thr benefit of Passport over the ColdCard is that it has a camera, so the workflow of reading unsigned transactions and sending the signed transactions is far less clunky than using a ColdCard. The UX is also pared down amd optimized for common use cases, whereas thr ColdCard is a Spartan all-business toolbox with many many tools.

So passport is more beginner-friendly, I guess? Thank you for your input ❀️

Yes that is my opinion. Under the hood, the Passport actually just runs modified ColdCard firmware, so the security and stability of the devices are comparable. The Passport is the hardware wallet that feels nicest in your hand. It has weight.

Agreed. I had no idea it ran Coldcard FW. Very cool.

The Jade is nice IMO, but, as a wallet, the security model is dependent on a remote server run by blockstream. The Jade can, however, be booted into a "signing device" mode, where you temporarily enter the 12/24 word seed phrase, sign/send a transaction using the camera, and shut it down with no data retained.

I will also say that the Jade has a tiny tiny screen. So if you use it in QR communication mode (vs Bluetooth paired with Green Wallet), it can be frustrating sending the signed transaction back to the device reading the QR code.

Say more about the remote server run by blockstream?

Non-technical breakdown: The Jade uses your numeric PIN code, a secret stored on the Jade, and the blinded Blockstream server secret to spend the bitcoin.

Technical summary: The Jade has no secure element. It stores the seed information encrypted with a secret on the Jade device. But the Jade secret is also encrypted. The user logs into the Jade with a PIN code. The Green wallet software will then reach out to Blockstream servers to retrieve the decryption information for the Jade secret. The Jade secret is decrypted, and the Jade can now spend the bitcoin.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure if the "Jade secret" is the seed itself, or is simply used to decryption of the seed.

If you are securing your generational wealth, use a cold card. Many advance functions that is too useful to ignore. Passport is just prettier and better UI, the price doesn’t justify the improvement

What makes the cold card better for "generational wealth"? To clarify, my intention is 100% to start throwing a great deal of savings into bitcoin, as opposed to the damn bank πŸ˜…

I created a Vault in #Bluewallet w 2 Jadewallets as stateless (QR code only) signing keys, and 1 mnemonic key.

You can also use the Jadewallet as an air gapped key w/ #Nunchuckwallet

Finally the OTP option in the Jade acts like a 2FA generator... (my current rabbit hole)

Thank you for the recommendation! The channel looks VERY informative and useful. Guess I've got some audio studying to do while I embroider, now πŸ₯°

Yeah absolutely πŸ’― you're welcome. The time and effort in those tutorials really has been helpful. Good luck and happy studying

BitKey just dropped. Seems highly beginner friendly and is multisig which is added security

Blockstream Jade is very easy to use, beginner friendly.

Can be used on desktop and an app on your phone.
