I like the idea of pro tiers for social nostr clients - a good way to keep projects sustainable and build loyalty and quality branding.

It’ll always be a race to the bottom and someone will release the same features for free, but a well crafted experience can set clients apart.

Would be cool to see gamified social clients. Achievements/levels/challenges with sat incentives and prizes.

Badge progression definitely coming and I’m hoping we can tie it to the real world tangible stuff somehow like ability to have exclusive merch only if you achieve X

🔥

It’s also a good way to gauge which features are most important. Paid user feedback > free user because they have skin in the game and align themselves with your success

As long as the pro tier doesnt impact the core experience- ie no sorting or preferring any communication based on payment status (like Elon is doing 🤮)

Just inject ads into feed. Pay user (and/or Creators) to enable them and let them select injection frequency. Simple

Paywalls. Never. Work. Ever.

If ads are injected into feeds that’s incentive for people to build their own clients?

Absolutely. No ads!!

Opposite. Paywalls it and watch them create their own. Or worse, kill the Network Effect from ever establishing.

Allow users to select frequency and pay them for viewing them. No ads, no payout. Some ads, some payout.

Client takes the cut to remain sustainable.

Reverse payment. Much better.

But there shouldn’t be any ads.

Nostr doesn’t need ads.

Does your bitcoin mobile wallet have ads?

Do you have to pay for your BTC mobile wallet?

Clients can do as they please. But paywalling is suicide. Be warned.

Again. Allow user to select ad frequency. If they want no ads, let them have no ads. Your use case solved. If they want an ad every 10 posts, let user set that. Or 1 every 20. User's choice.

But you pay the user a portion of the ad revenue as incentive incentivize allow ads view ads. When you pay the user, they'll allow ads. This is 98%+ of users.

In this format, the user isn't the product. They're also the landlord. And they have full flexibility to view or decline as they wish.

“Paywalls” as you call them are the foundation of every business ever created.

I rest my case.

most of nostr is opensource

And no open source app I’m aware of has ever succeeded at ads, and very few at paywalls. Instant fork and forget.

This is part of why I’m bearish on FOSS.

Cute another purple cat for me to follow

foss is the most used code in the world

intellectual property is a bad concept, we need to rethink how we reward the creative

copyfree is more my idea, reward more the more something is used

I haven’t been in foss that long but I have yet to see anyone even try to charge for anything.

There’s a few with a paid tier, and a few that charge for the convenience of getting the app from the platform’s store. Threema does this for instance.

Where’s my third purple cat at?

Playing Pokémon?

If he gets us all in the same spot, and feeds us the potion, we evolve.

Gotta catch em all!!!!

I'm a purple cat at heart 😂

samourai wallet has successfully found a way to generate revenue from whirlpool coinjoins, the entrance fee also functions as anti sybil attack and is therefore beneficial for the user for privacy gains

sparrow wallet then implemented whirlpool and takes a cut from from the entrance fee that come from sparrow users

beautiful FOSS in action

Doesn’t Samourai have atomic swaps?

Let me guess you pay for Linux too?

No ads!

Irony

What do you think of paid nostr clients? Like if they charge a small fee per year to use? Was just thinking how could start to monetize what people are building client side. Be cool to incentivize clients that you want to see more of or features adopted into others.

I think people should tests all sorts of things. It may bake harder due to foss but not impossible. Maybe not paid for general access but pro tiers for sure!! Snort has a paid subscription already though it doesn’t auto renew yet

Interesting. Also brings up if a client could whitelist relays and people to make private clients. Idk if thats even possible but be interesting to see if thats possible too. Also is there anything that uses sats to auto renew without sending and paying an invoice? That might be something to look into.

Yes I think nostr:npub1mutnyacc9uc4t5mmxvpprwsauj5p2qxq95v4a9j0jxl8wnkfvuyque23vg lets you autorenew without manual action. Correct me if I’m wrong. I need to test again.

Yes indeed regarding forked clients. It’s very possible that there may be a model where you can just opt in or opt out of various features in the “parent” client. Basically whitelisted version of the client to fit a specific brand or requirements. This has been largely unexplored.

Very interesting. Makes me now think about a network of clients that use only a specific network of relays. This brings up the fact big companies could use nostr with more control, but also still have a thriving uncensored clients and relay pools. thanks for the replies!

It’s possible to just use private relays.

Already do somewhat but just coukd see some wanting to be client specific too.
