This is one of a number of kriyas, or cleansing practices, in hatha yoga. Others include taking a thread through the nostrils and out the mouth, swallowing one end of a long thread down in to the stomach and then pulling it back out, drinking a large amount of salt water in short succession till the body pukes it back up, and sucking water up throught the anus to induce I kind of self enema!

I've practised most of these (not that last one!) She's practised nauli a lot though by the looks of things, I've not seen many people get that good at it!

I assume it's good for your breathing and core strength?

It takes strength and control in the abdominal muscles but it's a cleansing exercise and is more about cleansing the digestive system.
