There's more nuance than this.

Primal DOES allow you to connect your own wallet using NWC... On Android.

Apple is the reason they can't on iOS.

Primal also partnered with Strike for their wallet so that folks who are new to Nostr and don't have any Bitcoin experience at all can just pick up Primal, sign up for the app, buy some sats directly through the app, and start zapping. nostr:nprofile1qyxhwumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmvqyv8wumn8ghj7urjv4kkjatd9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wsqzp4sl80zm866yqrha4esknfwp0j4lxfrt29pkrh5nnnj2rgx6dm622n97yv believes Nostr will be a major way that people are onboarded to Bitcoin, and he has led his team to make design choices and tradeoffs with that in mind.

Any time you want to have access to fiat rails, there WILL be KYC involved. I am sure that this is gone over in detail in the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy readily accessible from the same screen where you are being asked for your information. Highlighted in bright magenta, no less.

For all of the reasons you mention, I personally will not be using Primal's wallet, and they are not my primary Nostr client. But I also understand that I am NOT their target market. They are trying to onboard people who have zero exposure to Nostr or Bitcoin, providing them the most convenient way to get started, with the hope that as they progress in their journey, they will adopt better practices.

Don't like the KYC? Don't use Primal's wallet. It wasn't made for folks like us. Mad that they don't have the NWC option available on iOS? Be angry at Apple. I am sure they would happily include it just like they did on Android, if they could.
