Tell them to only connect to the relays that are actually up and running and that you are connected to too

We tried that already. That is no solution. Relays go off and data and connections goes with them.

Most friends and family members are not able to follow complicated tech stuff just to make sure their social media phone app is reliable.

They are used to facebook, instagram and twitter.

Which are showing data very reliable for decades. Sadly currently #Nostr can‘t provide this reliable experience even for a week or a month.

I want to make people aware as most users here are deep into development and used to tech stuff and even used to mask huge UX problems.

Some forget the normal non tech savvy users.

You are right about that, it’s a drawback of the network. I have had very few issues with it, maybe because I use a couple paid relays? Idk

I have been thinking of the best way to get people I know on Nostr in a way that avoids the UX and data availability issues, or at least minimizes them. I don’t think non-tech savvy non-Bitcoiners can handle paying in bitcoin for a relay on top of the other issues you mention.

Maybe us as first wave Nostriches with tech skills should take it upon ourselves to run a relay or two just for our friends and family? They can choose any Nostr client and if they only connect to your relays then maybe the experience will be more consistent and we can keep them out of Global too which might be a good thing for some people 😂

I've mentioned this already. The sad, sad reality that I'm seeing is that the #normie solution is a #custodial service-app. Username & Password, functions as a client. Holds your keys, automagically sets up a #Lightning address for you (possibly acting as a node and skimming some transfer fees from you), sets up your #NIP05, and manages your relays. Even acts as one.

Not ideal and if powerful enough could break up #Nostr into separate communities, but it's what your neighbour Karen, your uncle Dick and your friends Kyle & Ashley are expecting.

Do you know if your relays are nearby? I think a lot of the time we are connecting to relays without thinking what country they're in, and anything far away is going to be really slow and unreliable.. it's much faster to prioritize relays that are nearby.

Nostr.watch has a map view, and some relays have geo distributed versions like relayable.org

Also, I noticed you have brb .io in there. This relay has been offline for months.. Any relay that is truly offline like this will slow down your client by a lot. Better to have less relays, that are mostly online, and prioritize finding ones that are close to you geographically.

Though I agree with you, this part is basically what I've been listening to for the last 10 years but for Bitcoin and traditional banking. They'll get there eventually just like they'll get to Bitcoin. Also eventually :)
