Iconic talk by Jaron Lanier

Given in 2018, but you watch it and you realize he could be talking about the current moment and opportunity with nostr

“We cannot have a society in which if two people wish to communicate the only way that can happen is if it’s financed by a third person who wishes to manipulate them”

Amen

“The alternative is to turn back the clock with great difficulty and remake that decision. Remaking it would mean two things. It would mean many people would actually pay for these things. You’d pay for search. You’d pay for social networking. How would you pay? Maybe with a subscription fee. Maybe with micropayments... If some of you are recoiling and saying: oh my god I would never pay for these things, how could you ever get anyone to pay? Well, companies like Netflix, Amazon, and HBO, said subscribe, and we’ll give you great TV. And it worked! Now we’re in peak TV. Sometimes when you pay for stuff things get better. We can imagine a hypothetical world of peak social media"

Amen

And, most powerfully:

“We have to create a culture around technology that is so beautiful, so meaningful, so deep, so endlessly creative, so filled with infinite potential that it draws us away from committing mass suicide”

Amen

pretty uninformed position. the internet is so complicated, I don't claim to understand it. Looks like jaron is talking about it as if he knows.

Lanier’s “You are Not a Gadget” A review https://habla.news/moon/1682346848571

1. Discovered doing EOM reports for a client: Tw/X no longer provides analytics for free accts.

2. Today discovered when setting up a new client acct: 2FA w/ text is no longer available for free Tw/X accts. (The other 2 options inc a bit of tracking.)

The pay-to-play there is obscuring productive discourse.

Since the first time I heard about Nostr I’m wondering if Jared knows about it. I hope he was in the recent Rick Rubins event

Someone would do well to create a tech stack subscription management company. One bill to one service provider who manages subscriptions on your behalf all in one easy portal. Toggle on/off or up/down for different services. Nostr relays, fountain app, Netflix, ISP, Amazon prime, nest, etc. link it with a LN node and get the UX right and you’d have customers for life. Once someone has 13 subscriptions managed in one place, they are never going to drop the service. “My tech bill for the month was $362” is a lot easier to grapple with than I have 13 subscriptions and some require billing and payment, some are auto pay but I have no idea what the total is or even if I use what I pay for.

Maybe someone should make personal servers as easy to use as those toggle switches you're describing..

Would be fun, if anyone could spinup easily servers, and anyone could provide the "iron" for it easily.

I mean if someone has many PCs at home or something, why not let others host things on it for sats?

Oh, but we can though. We absolutely can.

That quote goes hard

It's very hard to collaborate over a Twitter

Free collaboration is not much liked by governments or corporations
